Yellowstone says all campground reservations for the 2027 summer season will move to Recreation.gov, with reservations opening approximately six months ahead. Start with the National Park Service campground page, then use the actual Recreation.gov facility listing to confirm the release date, time, equipment rules and available nights. This guide covers Yellowstone camping reservations 2027 as they stood on November 3, 2026.
The important word is actual. On November 3, 2026, the current NPS camping page announced the transition, while older Recreation.gov pages for Madison and Canyon still said they did not take reservations there and directed travelers to Yellowstone National Park Lodges. That mismatch makes an old bookmark an unreliable guide to the 2027 booking process.
Use this article to decide which campground to monitor and what to prepare. It does not confirm that a particular 2027 stay is on sale or available. A published campground operating season is different from a released reservation calendar. Three checks decide whether a site can anchor your trip: the campground is scheduled to operate on your dates, its 2027 inventory has been released on the official booking listing, and the available site accepts your exact tent, vehicle or RV setup. All three must work before the reservation can anchor your trip.
What changed with the Yellowstone Recreation.gov 2027 move, and what has not been confirmed?
For many returning visitors, the confusing part of Yellowstone campground reservations is the separation between the park, a campground operator and the reservation platform. The 2027 announcement changes the booking destination. It does not mean every old page, account or search result has already updated.
| Question | What the current evidence supports | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Will summer 2027 campgrounds use Recreation.gov? | Yes. NPS announces the system-wide change. | Start from the current NPS camping page. |
| Will each campground use the same exact release time? | A universal exact hour was not confirmed in this review. | Read the live facility's booking-window section. |
| Is the planning window roughly six months? | Yes. NPS describes approximately six months and a rolling process. | Set an advance reminder, then verify the actual listing. |
| Are old Madison and Canyon pages reliable for 2027? | Some retrieved pages still describe the previous process. | Check the season and the date of the notice before following an old link. |
| Will an existing reservation or customer account migrate automatically? | No migration procedure was established by the sources reviewed. | Keep your confirmation and contact the provider named on it. Do not cancel or rebook on assumption. |
| Do campground dates guarantee every road or attraction is open? | No. Roads, facilities and trails have separate schedules and conditions. | Check the official road map and the individual activity before finalizing the route. |
Madison campground reservations and Canyon campground booking are the two cases most likely to send you to a stale page, so check the date of each listing before you rely on it. This is a good time to create or check your Recreation.gov account, but it is not a reason to make a duplicate reservation. If you already hold a valid confirmation, follow the instructions attached to that booking and any direct official notice you receive.

Yellowstone's published 2027 campground seasons
The following dates come from NPS's campground table, updated November 3, 2026. They describe the planned operating season, not a guarantee of availability. Weather, repairs and operational changes can affect them.
| Campground | Published 2027 season | Booking or trip-planning note |
|---|---|---|
| Bridge Bay | May 7 to September 12 | Confirm the exact site and booking release. |
| Canyon | May 28 to September 18 | A useful candidate when the Canyon area is central to the trip. |
| Fishing Bridge RV Park | May 14 to October 16 | Hard-sided RVs only; not a tent or tent-trailer substitute. |
| Grant Village | June 18 to September 25 | A May or early-June trip needs another campground. |
| Indian Creek | To be determined | Do not build fixed bookings around an assumed opening. |
| Lewis Lake | June 15 to October 10 | Verify equipment fit and site access. |
| Madison | May 7 to October 16 | Check the new 2027 listing rather than an older informational page. |
| Mammoth | Listed as year-round | Seasonal reservation details conflict within the source; verify the exact date with the live listing or park. |
| Pebble Creek | Closed until further notice | Exclude it from a confirmed 2027 camping plan unless NPS announces reopening. |
| Slough Creek | June 15 to October 11 | Check the facility's actual release and site restrictions. |
| Tower Fall | May 28 to September 26 | Check road approach and equipment restrictions. |
For Mammoth, the NPS summary and table footnote do not agree on every shoulder-season boundary. We have not picked one and presented it as settled. If your trip falls near a change between reservations and first-come, first-served camping, check the individual listing and ask the park if the instructions still conflict.
Do not treat an unavailable campground as a reason to sleep in a pullout. Yellowstone prohibits overnight vehicle camping outside designated campgrounds. A legal overnight alternative must be part of the backup plan.
Good ideas deserve a place on the map.

First select the arrival date at each campground. In a rolling system, that is the date from which you work backward. Then check whether the facility uses a calendar-month window, a different release arrangement, or additional rules for the rest of the stay.
Recreation.gov's FAQ explains that facilities set their own booking windows. Its reservation preparation guide also warns that common release times are not universal. The facility's live booking information is the place to resolve the details.
| Illustrative arrival | Six calendar months earlier | How to use the calculation |
|---|---|---|
| May 7, 2027 | November 7, 2026 | A reminder to inspect the listing; not a confirmed sale date. |
| June 15, 2027 | December 15, 2026 | Check both the release and whether the chosen campground is open. |
| July 10, 2027 | January 10, 2027 | Confirm the listing's actual date and time before relying on the reminder. |
| August 20, 2027 | February 20, 2027 | Use the precise facility rules, including how later nights can be booked. |
These examples are calendar arithmetic. They are not announcements of Yellowstone release dates. The distinction is especially important during a platform transition, when inventory may be loaded or released differently from an established season.
For a two-base trip, record two arrival dates and two booking checks. Do not assume that reserving the first base automatically lets you reserve another campground beyond its window. Read the instructions for each facility and confirm the complete sequence before making non-refundable arrangements elsewhere.
Choose a base that matches the trip you want
A campground is more than a place to sleep. It determines the first and last drive of each day. Before ranking sites, decide which area deserves the largest part of your time and how often you are willing to pack up camp.
For a short trip, staying in one suitable location can be more practical than chasing small daily driving savings with repeated moves. For a longer trip with priorities on different sides of the park, two bases may be worth the packing time. Our Yellowstone in Four Days: One Base or Two guide handles that route decision in detail.
| Your main priority | Campgrounds to investigate first | Tradeoff to test before booking |
|---|---|---|
| Geyser-basin time and a west-side approach | Madison, then other compatible bases that fit the route | A base convenient for one region can still mean a substantial trip to another. |
| Canyon-area sightseeing during its operating season | Canyon | Do not assume an opening campground means every high-elevation walk is ready. |
| Yellowstone Lake and a southern continuation | Bridge Bay or Grant Village, if open | Check the next day's route and avoid unnecessary backtracking. |
| Full hookups for a hard-sided RV | Fishing Bridge RV Park | Confirm the exact vehicle dimensions, site and services; tent campers need a different option. |
| Northern park priorities | Mammoth, Slough Creek or Tower Fall if appropriate and open | Check the specific site and access; small or restricted inventory may limit flexibility. |
The table is a planning shortlist, not a ranking of campground quality. A site that fits your equipment and confirmed dates is more useful than a theoretically perfect base that cannot accommodate you. List your preferred bases, dates and acceptable substitutions before the release, then reserve directly through the official campground listing.
Check your equipment before competing for a site
Record the dimensions of the equipment that will actually arrive, including any combination the listing asks you to measure. A campground-wide maximum is not proof that every individual site can fit that setup. Check the site description, photographs and access notes rather than relying on the first search result.
For a rental RV, the booked vehicle category may still leave uncertainty about the exact unit. Ask the rental provider how dimensions will be confirmed and whether the booking allows a substitute. Resolve that uncertainty before choosing a marginally sized campsite.
For a tent, check the tent-pad arrangement and the number of tents allowed. For any group, verify occupancy, parking and extra-vehicle rules. A site that sleeps the people but cannot accept the vehicle arrangement can still be the wrong booking.
NPS identifies Fishing Bridge as a hard-sided-unit campground. A tent, pop-up or tent-trailer booking should not be routed there simply because hookups appear in the search results. The correct accommodation type comes before amenities.
Your release-day checklist
- Open the current facility listing. Confirm the park, campground, year and arrival date.
- Check the release information. Record the actual date, hour and time zone shown for that facility. If it is still missing, monitor the official source instead of inventing a release time.
- Apply the right equipment filters. Use the real size and accommodation type, not a smaller estimate intended to reveal more options.
- Keep alternatives in order. Decide which sites, dates or bases are acceptable before booking starts.
- Read the total and terms. Check the stay, taxes and charges, change rules and cancellation conditions before paying.
- Save and review the confirmation. Verify all nights, the campground, the site or accommodation category, and the equipment details.
- Only then finalize connected arrangements. Flights, RV hire, tours and subsequent overnight stops need to match the confirmed trip.
Recreation.gov's reservation policies explain general cancellation and no-show concepts, but individual facilities can have additional conditions. Read the terms attached to the actual reservation instead of treating a generic policy summary as the entire contract.
A simple campsite cost calculation
NPS's November 3 table lists Madison at $38 per night plus taxes and Canyon at $45 plus taxes. Use these as dated published benchmarks until the live checkout shows the actual cost for your dates.
| Illustrative four-night camping arrangement | Calculation | Accommodation subtotal |
|---|---|---|
| Four nights at Madison | 4 x $38 | $152 before taxes and other applicable charges |
| Two nights at Madison plus two at Canyon | (2 x $38) + (2 x $45) | $166 before taxes and other applicable charges |
| Difference in the listed campsite subtotal | $166 minus $152 | $14; travel, packing time and any separate fees still matter |
The two-base option is only $14 more in this limited calculation. That does not make it automatically better. Moving camp consumes time, while staying put can add driving. Compare the actual route, trip length and checkout terms before deciding. The arithmetic uses published nightly benchmarks and assumes the same travelers and four nights; it does not claim availability.
Add the costs that are absent here: park entry where required, fuel, food, rental equipment, showers or laundry if charged, reservations and taxes. Keep the booking confirmation as the final price record.
Build the itinerary after the nights are confirmed
Keep arrival day light. Allow time to enter the park, reach the campground, check in and establish camp. Put your main sightseeing or hiking day after the first night. If changing bases, reserve time for packing, travel and the next check-in instead of treating the transfer as a normal full activity day.
Check the current NPS road page separately. Planned campground seasons and road openings do not always align, and a route that works in July may not work in May. Review current conditions again before departure and use local instructions on arrival.

Frequently asked questions
Can I book Yellowstone summer 2027 camping now?
The park has announced the Recreation.gov transition and an approximately six-month window. Whether a particular stay is bookable depends on its facility's live calendar and release instructions. This guide has not verified inventory for a specific stay.
Why does an old Recreation.gov page still say to book elsewhere?
The sources reviewed on November 3 did not all show the same stage of the transition. Use NPS's current announcement and follow the updated booking link for the correct season. An old informational page is not evidence that the 2027 announcement has been withdrawn.
Does six months ahead mean 10 a.m. Eastern?
Do not assume a universal time. Recreation.gov says release times can vary by facility. Use the exact time and time zone on the campground listing.
Is Fishing Bridge suitable for a tent?
No. NPS identifies it as a campground for completely hard-sided units. Choose an appropriate tent campground and verify the site.
Can I camp in the car if all campgrounds are full?
Not in an undesignated Yellowstone pullout, parking area or picnic ground. Arrange a legal overnight location before arriving or change the trip.
Should I cancel an existing reservation because of the platform change?
Do not cancel on assumption. Retain the confirmation and ask the provider named on it how the change affects your booking. The sources reviewed did not establish a universal migration process.
Conclusion
Yellowstone's move to Recreation.gov for summer 2027 changes where you book, but each campground's season, release date and equipment rules still have to be confirmed on its live listing. Work back about six months from each arrival date, keep an ordered list of acceptable alternatives, and match your tent, vehicle or RV to the site before you pay. Hold on to any existing confirmation until the provider tells you otherwise.
