Yellowstone and Grand Teton in Seven Days: A Camping Itinerary That Avoids Backtracking

Plan seven days in Yellowstone and Grand Teton with three camping bases, realistic drives, wildlife stops, 2027 booking changes and road updates.

Read the article

For a seven-day Yellowstone and Grand Teton camping trip, use three bases: two nights at Colter Bay, two at Madison and two at Canyon. Start near Jackson, travel north through Grand Teton, explore Yellowstone's western geyser basins, then move toward the canyon, Hayden Valley and Lamar Valley.

This is a seven-day trip with six campground nights and two campsite moves. It works especially well when you can finish through Yellowstone's Northeast Entrance. If your flight or rental return is in Jackson, reserve time for the drive south or reverse the itinerary around your actual arrival point.

The route below is intended for summer and early fall. Planning information was checked on October 27, 2026, including announced 2027 campground dates and construction plans. Arrival travel to Jackson and onward travel after the final park day need their own time allowance.

01

The seven-day route at a glance

The overnight sequence is the organizing decision. Colter Bay covers Grand Teton, Madison covers the western thermal areas, and Canyon covers the central and eastern sights. You visit West Thumb while moving north, rather than making a separate long excursion from Canyon. Local return drives remain, including Jenny Lake and Hayden Valley; the saving comes from reducing repeated cross-park transfers.

DayMain planOvernightApproximate driving
1Jackson arrival, supplies and a short Colter Bay walkColter Bay45 to 60 miles; allow 1 to 2 hours moving
2Jenny Lake, with a hike matched to your groupColter Bay40 to 50 miles; 1 to 2 hours moving
3South Entrance, West Thumb and the transfer to MadisonMadison75 to 90 miles; 2.5 to 3.5 hours moving
4Old Faithful, Upper Geyser Basin and Grand PrismaticMadison35 to 50 miles; 1.5 to 2 hours moving
5Norris Geyser Basin, then canyon viewpointsCanyon35 to 50 miles; 1.5 to 2 hours moving
6Hayden Valley, Mud Volcano and Yellowstone LakeCanyon35 to 50 miles; 1.5 to 2 hours moving
7Dunraven Pass, Lamar Valley and Northeast departureOnward accommodation50 to 65 miles to the Northeast Entrance; 2 to 3 hours moving

These are rounded planning ranges for the listed route, including modest local detours. They exclude sightseeing, meals, campground setup, entrance queues and wildlife delays. The road network comes from the NPS two-park map; time allowances use NPS driving guidance. Final mileage depends on your campsite, parking and selected viewpoints. NPS Yellowstone and Grand Teton road map · NPS Yellowstone directions and driving times

For the easiest version, target July through early September and confirm that your campground dates overlap. Earlier trips can encounter lingering trail snow; later trips have shorter campground and road seasons. NPS notes that Grand Teton's valley trails generally lose their snow before its high mountain trails. NPS Grand Teton hiking and seasonal conditions · Official Yellowstone 2027 operating dates

Why three bases make a practical difference

A campground can look central on a regional map while still creating repetitive drives.

Consider just the Madison-to-Canyon connection. The NPS road map shows 14 miles from Madison to Norris and another 12 to Canyon: 26 miles each way.

If you stay at Madison while visiting the Canyon area on two separate days, that connector alone accounts for 104 miles. Move to Canyon on the first of those days and stay there, and you use it once: 26 miles. That removes 78 miles of repeated connector driving in this specific comparison, before counting local sightseeing. NPS Yellowstone and Grand Teton road map

NPS estimates about 30 minutes for each of those two road segments. On that basis, the change removes approximately three hours of connector driving across the two days, before traffic and animal delays. This is a route calculation, not a measured saving for every trip; moving camp also takes time. NPS Yellowstone directions and driving times

Two-night stays balance those competing costs. You get a full day in each area without dismantling camp every morning.

If you only have four days for Yellowstone, use the separate Yellowstone in Four Days guide. This itinerary is designed around a full week, two parks and campground transitions.

03

Choose campsites by location and camping setup

Colter Bay Campground and Colter Bay RV Park are separate facilities. Madison and Canyon offer developed camping but no hookups. Those distinctions matter when your vehicle needs electricity or your group expects showers every night.

CampgroundBest use in this itineraryFacilities and restrictions

Fishing Bridge RV ParkAlternative when full hookups determine the Yellowstone baseWater, sewer and electricity. Hard-sided RVs only, with no tents or tent-style slideouts. Its lake location changes the daily driving plan. Fishing Bridge RV Park operator information

Check the complete vehicle dimensions

Colter Bay Campground's operator lists a maximum combined RV and tow-vehicle length of 45 feet. Madison and Canyon describe RV accommodation up to 40 feet, but that does not mean every site fits a 40-foot vehicle plus a separate tow vehicle. Colter Bay Campground operator information · Madison Campground operator information · Canyon Campground operator information

Enter the whole setup when booking: motorhome or trailer length, tow vehicle, slideouts and any additional tent. Read the individual site's limits. An available tent site is not automatically suitable for a campervan or rooftop tent.

For a trailer, two-night bases also let you leave it at your reserved campsite while sightseeing in the tow vehicle. With a motorhome, allow more flexibility around busy parking areas.

Know the published 2027 operating dates

The operator currently lists these Yellowstone campground seasons, all subject to change:

  • Madison: May 7 to October 17, 2027.
  • Canyon: May 28 to September 19, 2027.
  • Fishing Bridge RV Park: May 14 to October 17, 2027.
  • Bridge Bay: May 21 to September 13, 2027.
  • Grant Village: June 18 to September 26, 2027. Official Yellowstone 2027 operating dates

Check Colter Bay's actual 2027 booking calendar before aligning the three reservations. A general description such as “mid-May to late September” does not establish the opening date for your year.

04

How to book the trip for 2027

Yellowstone's campground booking process changes for summer 2027. Reservations for Madison, Canyon, Grant, Bridge Bay and Fishing Bridge RV Park move to Recreation.gov, opening approximately six months ahead. The operator's familiar 13-month policy should not be applied to those 2027 campground reservations. Yellowstone National Park Lodges reservation policies

Grand Teton's campgrounds also use Recreation.gov, generally with a six-month rolling booking window. Colter Bay campground reservations are separate from lodging reservations and cannot be made through the Grand Teton Lodge Company lodging call center. Colter Bay Campground operator information

Build the reservations in this order:

  1. Decide the start and finish. Confirm your vehicle pickup and return locations before choosing a northbound route.
  2. Record the three check-in dates. Each base has its own booking date and site requirements.
  3. Check each campground's release instructions. Use the actual Recreation.gov listing for release times, site details and cancellation terms.
  4. Secure six compatible nights. Two disconnected bookings do not create a complete camping itinerary.
  5. Adapt the route to the nights available. Moving the whole trip by a day may work better than adding an inconvenient campground in the middle.

Budget separately for the six campground nights, park admission, transport, food, showers and any boat tickets. Campground reservations do not include Yellowstone's entrance fee. Yellowstone National Park Lodges reservation policies

If the preferred campgrounds are full

Choose a replacement in the same part of the trip where possible.

Gros Ventre can replace Colter Bay for visitors prioritizing Jackson and southern Grand Teton. It has tent and RV camping, some electric-only sites, water and flush toilets, but no campground showers. Its southern location makes the Yellowstone transfer longer. Gros Ventre Campground on Recreation.gov

Grant or Bridge Bay can suit a lake-focused Yellowstone plan, but neither reproduces Madison's western location or Canyon's northern reach. If one becomes your main base, reduce the number of northern excursions. West Yellowstone and Gardiner can provide gateway alternatives, but their entrance drives become part of every park day. The map should determine the replacement itinerary. NPS Yellowstone and Grand Teton road map

Do not use a roadside pullout as an overnight fallback. Yellowstone prohibits overnight vehicle parking and camping outside designated campgrounds. NPS Yellowstone camping regulations

05

Day 1: Arrive near Jackson and settle at Colter Bay

Treat the first day as an arrival day with a modest outdoor objective.

Collect the vehicle, buy groceries and check your camping equipment before heading north. A late flight, slow rental pickup or missing sleeping pad should not force you to abandon a major hike.

If you arrive early, choose one viewpoint on the way to camp. Mormon Row can be an optional stop, but construction extends into 2027 and may restrict access around some buildings. Keep it flexible. NPS Grand Teton construction

Once camp is established, walk the Colter Bay Lakeshore Trail if time and energy allow. NPS lists a 2.2-mile loop with about 100 feet of elevation gain. The route still has roots and rocks, so “easy” does not mean a paved, obstacle-free walk. NPS Colter Bay Lakeshore Trail

For a late arrival, shorten the outing and get dinner organized before dark. The useful achievement today is a functioning camp and a rested group.

Overnight: Colter Bay.

06

Day 2: Give Jenny Lake a full morning

Head toward Jenny Lake early and choose the walking plan before joining the boat queue.

The shuttle boat changes the hiking distance substantially. The following NPS distances are round trip:

DestinationWith the boat both waysEntirely on foot from South Jenny Lake
Hidden Falls1 mile hiking, about 300 feet of gain4.9 miles hiking, about 620 feet of gain
Inspiration Point1.8 miles hiking, about 550 feet of gain5.7 miles hiking, about 870 feet of gain

The boat-based distances begin on the west side of the lake. Inspiration Point includes rock steps, uneven ground and steep sections, even when you shorten the approach by boat. NPS Hidden Falls trail options · NPS Inspiration Point trail options

The boat operator currently sells shuttle tickets at the dock without reservations. Check the published schedule for your travel year and note the last return boat before setting out. Include time for queues; a short crossing does not make this an instant transfer. Jenny Lake Boating shuttle information

Choose one of those hikes as the main activity. Afterward, have lunch, visit a lakeside viewpoint or return to Colter Bay. If Jenny Lake parking or boat waits consume too much time, use a Colter Bay walk instead of squeezing a longer hike into the afternoon.

2027 change: the standard Taggart Lake trailhead and trails are scheduled to close from May 1 for summer construction. Access from the Valley Trail to the north is a different outing. Do not substitute the familiar short Taggart hike into this plan without checking the revised route. NPS Grand Teton construction

Overnight: Colter Bay.

07

Day 3: Enter Yellowstone and visit West Thumb on the way

Break camp and travel north through the John D. Rockefeller, Jr. Memorial Parkway to Yellowstone's South Entrance.

Your main sightseeing stop is West Thumb Geyser Basin, on Yellowstone Lake. Afterward, continue over Craig Pass toward Old Faithful and then north to Madison. This puts the lake's southwestern thermal area on a transfer you already need to make. NPS Yellowstone and Grand Teton road map

Allow most of the day for the move. The table's driving allowance does not include packing camp, the entrance queue, a boardwalk walk, lunch or setting up again.

Passing Old Faithful does not require stopping today. It has a full slot tomorrow. If you reach Madison late, cook a simple meal and use the evening to check the next day's weather and geyser information.

This is also a sensible day to refill drinking-water containers and deal with waste tanks where facilities are operating. Do not assume that every dump station remains available in freezing conditions. NPS Yellowstone camping regulations

Overnight: Madison.

08

Day 4: Build the geyser day around Old Faithful

Make Old Faithful and the Upper Geyser Basin the morning's main activity.

Check the current eruption prediction when you arrive, then decide whether to wait nearby or walk a short boardwalk section first. Predictions are available through the visitor education center, nearby lodges and the NPS App. Avoid building lunch or a long drive around an assumed eruption minute. NPS Old Faithful and Upper Geyser Basin

For most groups, one substantial Upper Geyser Basin walk plus the eruption is enough before lunch. Families can use part of that time for a Junior Ranger or Young Scientist activity available through the visitor center. NPS Old Faithful and Upper Geyser Basin

In the afternoon, choose the Grand Prismatic Overlook if the trail is open and parking is available. It is a 1.2-mile round trip from the Fairy Falls trailhead with about 105 feet of ascent. This is a different access point from the Midway Geyser Basin boardwalk parking area. NPS Grand Prismatic Overlook Trail

Treat an additional basin as optional. You do not need to complete every boardwalk along the corridor to make this a worthwhile day.

The Biscuit Basin trailhead was still listed as closed because of thermal activity at the October 2026 check. Keep the standard Mystic Falls approach from Biscuit out of your itinerary unless reopening is confirmed. An alternate approach requires its own mileage and access check. NPS Yellowstone backcountry conditions

Overnight: Madison.

09

Day 5: Move camp via Norris, then explore the canyon

Pack camp and drive toward Norris.

Choose the Porcelain Basin loop, approximately three-quarters of a mile, for a compact morning walk. The separate Back Basin circuit is about 1.5 miles. Decide how much thermal walking you want before committing to both, because you still have a campground move and canyon sightseeing ahead. NPS Norris Geyser Basin

Continue to Canyon and check the campground's arrival instructions. Once the day's setup is handled, choose a small group of canyon viewpoints.

Artist Point provides a view of the Lower Falls from the south rim. On the north rim, Lookout Point and Grand View offer other perspectives. Some viewpoint approaches and rim paths have stairs or steep grades; choose an accessible viewing area or a short open segment when the group needs easier walking. NPS Canyon Village and Hayden Valley · NPS Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone viewpoints and walks

Keep any steep descent optional. A short mileage label can conceal a demanding climb back out.

The afternoon can also absorb a slow arrival, a shower or time at the Canyon Visitor Education Center. That flexibility is one reason to stay here twice.

Overnight: Canyon.

10

Day 6: Give Hayden Valley time

Leave camp early for Hayden Valley, with breakfast packed and a generous viewing window.

Choose legal pullouts and spend time watching. Driving repeatedly between every cluster of parked cars can consume the morning without improving the experience. Wildlife sightings depend on conditions and animal movement; the itinerary provides time, not a promised species list.

Hayden Valley is a well-established wildlife-viewing area close to Canyon. Continue south afterward to Mud Volcano, where the main boardwalk and pavement loop is 0.6 mile with some steep sections. A shorter lower-area visit is possible if the group has had enough walking. NPS Canyon Village and Hayden Valley · NPS Mud Volcano Trail

Continue toward Fishing Bridge and the northern shore of Yellowstone Lake for lunch and a break. Return to Canyon through Hayden Valley.

West Thumb already has its place on Day 3. Taking today's outing that far south would add another substantial drive before returning to the same campground.

Leave the late afternoon available for a canyon viewpoint missed yesterday, laundry or rest. A second wildlife session can work if everyone still has energy, but it does not need to become another fixed appointment.

Overnight: Canyon.

11

Day 7: Finish through Lamar Valley

Check the status of the Canyon-to-Tower road before leaving camp. When Dunraven Pass is open, continue north to Tower Junction, then east through Lamar Valley toward the Northeast Entrance.

Canyon is useful for the final northern departure, but it is not a campsite beside Lamar. NPS estimates 50 to 60 minutes just from Canyon to Tower Junction. If first-light wildlife viewing in Lamar is your overriding goal, consider moving the final night closer to the Northern Range and accepting an extra campsite move. NPS Yellowstone directions and driving times

For the standard version, make the drive and wildlife stops the day's main activity. Bring binoculars, a packed lunch and a flexible departure time.

The Slough Creek first-meadow hike can be an alternative for a hiking-focused group. NPS lists 3.4 miles round trip and a steep initial climb. It replaces part of the viewing schedule; it is not a casual addition before a long onward drive. Check trail conditions and suitability of the access road for your vehicle. NPS Slough Creek Trail

Finish through the Northeast Entrance only if that exit fits your onward destination and road conditions. Continuing toward Red Lodge or Cody requires a separate check of the roads beyond Cooke City. A road being open through Yellowstone does not establish that every onward mountain route is open. NPS Yellowstone road status

If you need a different exit

For Gardiner or Bozeman: use the final day for Mammoth Hot Springs and a North Entrance departure. Choose the approach according to current road controls. Trying to combine a long Lamar viewing session, Mammoth sightseeing and an onward travel deadline creates a much busier day.

For Jackson: make Day 7 a southbound return through the Lake and West Thumb corridor. That replaces the Northeast departure. If Lamar remains essential, use it instead of Day 6's lake outing or add a day.

For a trip beginning in Montana: reverse the overall sequence when campsite availability and your departure airport support it.

The route direction should follow the transport arrangements. Booking those arrangements after the campsites can force you into the repeated drives you were trying to avoid.

What the 2027 road plans actually mean

Several Yellowstone projects have published timelines extending into 2027. Those timelines identify corridors to monitor; they do not establish full-season closures or specific delay lengths.

Corridor or projectPublished project timingWhat to check for your trip
Gardner River High Bridge between Mammoth and Tower JunctionWork listed for 2026 through estimated completion in 2027Traffic controls affecting a Mammoth-to-Tower drive
Norris to Golden Gate, Phase 3Estimated 2027 to 2029Access near Swan Lake Flat, Golden Gate and Mammoth
North Entrance Road replacementEstimated 2027 to 2030Current route and controls between Mammoth and Gardiner

NPS describes these schedules as estimates that may change. Do not carry an old project's delay estimate forward into 2027 without a current notice. NPS Yellowstone infrastructure projects

At the October 27, 2026 check, Yellowstone's road page still displayed 2026 regular-vehicle opening dates, alongside 2026 to 2027 winter oversnow dates. Neither establishes the summer 2027 driving calendar. The South Entrance, Craig Pass and Dunraven Pass all need confirmation for the actual trip dates. NPS Yellowstone road status

In Grand Teton, the confirmed summer Taggart closure is already reflected in this itinerary. Recheck the park's construction page before adding alternative trailheads or side roads. NPS Grand Teton construction

13

Wildlife viewing and a workable campsite routine

Plan wildlife viewing from established pullouts and designated areas. Keep binoculars accessible so seeing an animal does not turn into an attempt to approach it.

In both parks, stay at least 100 yards from bears and wolves and 25 yards from other wildlife. Yellowstone also explicitly places cougars in the 100-yard category. Back away if an animal closes the distance, and follow ranger directions. NPS Yellowstone safety · NPS Grand Teton safety

Carry bear spray where you can reach it while hiking, and know how to use it. Keep the group together and children close. At camp, store food, coolers, toiletries, cooking equipment and other attractants according to campground instructions, using bear-resistant lockers or an appropriate secured hard-sided vehicle. A tent is not food storage. NPS Grand Teton bear safety and food storage

In thermal areas, stay on designated trails and boardwalks. Keep children close and do not touch hot springs or their runoff. These rules apply even when a feature appears quiet. NPS Yellowstone safety

Make lunch preparation part of the previous evening's routine. Fill water bottles, organize rain layers and put breakfast where you can retrieve it without unpacking the entire vehicle. A calm departure leaves more room for an unexpected wildlife stop.

14

Backups that preserve the shape of the trip

If Dunraven Pass is closed: reconsider the final departure through Mammoth or allow for the longer road connection to Tower. Do not accept an app's shortcut without checking NPS road status.

If a thunderstorm or poor trail conditions cancel a hike: shorten the outdoor plan and use an open visitor center. At Canyon, moving the viewpoint walk to the other day is easier because the base stays the same.

If a campground reservation falls through: replace the base and recalculate its day trips. A southern Yellowstone site may support a good lake-and-geyser visit while making repeated Lamar drives impractical.

If the group is tired: retain one main activity and remove the optional stop. Keep the campsite sequence intact where possible.

If smoke or a major closure affects the region: check current park alerts and air-quality information before committing to the next leg. A change in overall destination can be more useful than moving a hike a few miles away.

Before each transfer, check weather, roads, campground instructions and the next morning's main activity. Keep maps and reservation details available offline.

Personalize the week around the reservations you can secure

The best version of this trip depends on your vehicle, walking pace, available campsites and departure point.

Use Xavier to plan your Yellowstone and Grand Teton trip with a specific request:

Plan seven days and six camping nights in Grand Teton and Yellowstone. Start near Jackson and finish through the Northeast Entrance. Aim for two nights near Colter Bay, two near Madison and two near Canyon. Include my complete vehicle dimensions, keep daily hikes within my group's limit, and build alternatives around current road restrictions and available campgrounds.

If you need full hookups, a Jackson return, shorter walks or an extra wildlife morning, include that at the start. Those choices affect the route more than adding another viewpoint to an already full day.

Turn what you read into a trip.
