Five days fits Zion and a short Bryce Canyon visit. Seven days gives those same two parks time to breathe. Ten days makes Capitol Reef a worthwhile addition. For a trip that begins and ends in Las Vegas, that is the choice this planner recommends.
The difference is what happens between the names on the map: collecting a rental car, reaching the shuttle, finding lunch, checking into another hotel and returning for your flight. Below are three versions of the same southern Utah corridor, with exact overnight bases and the activities each version keeps or removes.
Choose your version of the Las Vegas loop
All three itineraries start at Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas on Day 1 and end there on the final day. They assume two adults, a standard passenger car, hotel or motel stays, and mostly easy walking. The ten-day version includes one optional moderate hike. They are designed for late September or October, subject to the weather and access checks below.
Plan an arrival flight scheduled by approximately 10 a.m. on Day 1, with the aim of leaving Las Vegas by noon after collecting the car and supplies. That is a scheduling assumption, not a guaranteed airport turnaround. Every version spends its final night in Las Vegas, keeping the long return drive separate from departure day.
How the plan was built: road connections, park access and trail facts were checked against official sources on October 7, 2026. The time blocks are original editorial planning allowances, not recorded journeys, live navigation estimates or field-tested results. A full park day means there is no transfer to another overnight base; it does not mean nine uninterrupted hours of sightseeing.

The route, distances and realistic transfer blocks
The core route is Las Vegas, Springdale for Zion, Bryce Canyon City, Las Vegas. Drive I-15 north and UT-9 east to Springdale. For Bryce, continue through Zion on the Zion-Mount Carmel Highway, then use US-89 north, UT-12 east and UT-63 south. Return from Bryce via UT-12 west, US-89 north, UT-20 west and I-15 south. These follow the parks' published approaches. [1] [2]
The ten-day extension continues from Bryce along UT-12 through Escalante and Boulder to Torrey. The return uses UT-24 west, UT-62 toward US-89, US-89 south, UT-20 west and I-15 south. Verify the exact turn sequence and current road conditions before leaving Torrey; this reverses one of Capitol Reef's published I-15 approaches. [3]
For distance context, NPS lists Las Vegas airport approximately 170 miles from Zion and Las Vegas approximately 270 miles from Bryce. Utah's official tourism distance chart lists 88 miles between Zion and Bryce and 137 miles between Bryce and Capitol Reef. Allow more time whenever weather, construction, queues or your driver's needs require it. Utah is on Mountain Time; Las Vegas is on Pacific Time. At Bryce, the paved section between Sunset and Sunrise points is one mile round trip, with approximately 40 feet of elevation change. NPS classifies it as easy; ice, altitude and an individual's mobility still affect suitability. You do not need to descend into the amphitheater to make this short visit worthwhile. [6]
What five days removes: a second Zion day, Bryce's longer southern drive, substantial hikes below the rim and the entire Capitol Reef extension. Do not put those activities back into the margins. If your main interest is hiking in Zion, an equally sensible five-day choice is to remove Bryce and stay in Springdale for three nights before returning to Las Vegas.
7 days: the recommended Zion and Bryce balance
The seven-day route adds no new overnight town and no additional major transfer. Its extra two days go directly to the parks. That makes it the clearest upgrade if you can extend a five-day trip.

Bryce's main road runs 18 miles from north to south, with the amphitheater concentrated near the first three miles. For the longer scenic drive, NPS recommends making viewpoint stops while returning north, when they are on your right. That is an out-and-back park excursion, not a shortcut toward the next town. [7]
What seven days adds: another full day at Zion, one full day at Bryce, and more flexibility to move walks around poor weather. It still excludes Capitol Reef. Its value comes from fewer rushed decisions, not a larger park count.
10 days: add Scenic Byway 12 and Capitol Reef
The first five days stay the same as the seven-day plan. The extension adds three nights in Torrey, two full days around Capitol Reef's Fruita district and a dedicated return day. That gives the extra transfer a purpose.

Capitol Reef's Scenic Drive is 7.9 miles of paved road, suitable for passenger vehicles when conditions permit. Fruita brings together short visits to historic places, orchards and the petroglyph panel. Orchard access and fruit availability are seasonal, so the itinerary does not depend on a harvest or a particular shop being open. [8] [9] [18]
Hickman Bridge is a step up from the easy default: the NPS trail guide lists 0.9 miles one way and 400 feet of elevation change, classified as moderate. That makes approximately 1.8 miles for the out-and-back walk. Choose it because the group wants that effort, not because an open afternoon needs filling. [10]
What ten days adds: a third park and a scenic connecting road, at the cost of another 6.5 hours of planned inter-base transfer time compared with seven days. Arches and Canyonlands remain outside this loop. Adding them would require removing meaningful time from these stops or building a different route.
How much usable time does a park day really have?
A useful itinerary subtracts transport and basic needs before assigning activities. Here are two worked examples, using a nine-hour window from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. These are planning exercises, not predictions of queue length or your walking speed.

NPS estimates about 45 minutes each way between Zion Canyon Visitor Center and the Temple of Sinawava, the basis for the 1.5-hour shuttle allowance. The other deductions are editorial choices. If your Springdale access and queue time takes two hours, the Zion activity allowance becomes four hours. Reduce the activity list when that happens. [5]
For the transfer day, 9 minus 3 minus 1 minus 1 minus 0.5 equals 3.5 hours. That is enough to orient yourself at Bryce and enjoy a short rim outing. It does not justify treating the same date as a full Zion morning and a full Bryce afternoon.
Autumn access decisions that change the plan
Use the Zion shuttle as the starting point
During shuttle season, ordinary visitor vehicles cannot drive the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive. This is separate from UT-9 through the park, which the route uses for the Bryce transfer. The shuttle does not require a reservation or ticket, and park admission is separate. Check the schedule for your dates and return well before the last bus. [5]
Riverside Walk ends where a river hike would begin. This plan turns around on land. The Narrows is a separate decision involving water conditions and preparation; it is not a casual extension of a spare hour. Check Zion's trail and current-condition information for any closure affecting the day's walk. [11] [16]
Plan for cold and snow at the higher stops
Bryce can receive snow in October, and NPS reports that overnight freezing is common from October into spring. Bring warm layers and reassess icy walks. A pleasant afternoon in Springdale does not establish conditions at Bryce. [12]
UT-12 reaches approximately 9,600 feet on Boulder Mountain. Check UDOT's road conditions and cameras before the Torrey transfer. Stay on the planned highways; Capitol Reef specifically warns that navigation systems may suggest South Draw Road, an unsuitable high-clearance route for ordinary passenger cars. [3] [14]
Match the vehicle and bookings to the route
The Zion-Mount Carmel Highway now has size and weight restrictions covering the entire section between Canyon Junction and the East Entrance. If you change from a passenger car to an RV or trailer, recheck that route before booking around it. A longer vehicle may require a different transfer. [13]
Check availability at the named overnight bases before committing to flight dates, then coordinate lodging and the rental car around the final schedule. If staying farther from a park saves money, add the extra commute to every affected day before accepting the tradeoff. Check actual meal, fuel and charging options along your chosen route, and carry what you need for the day's outings.
What to change when the original plan stops fitting
If your flight arrives late: stay in Las Vegas instead of forcing the first transfer after a tiring journey. In the five-day version, remove Bryce and use Days 2 and 3 for the transfer to Zion and a full canyon day, then return on Day 4. In the seven- or ten-day version, move the Springdale transfer to Day 2 and give up the extra Zion day. Adjust the affected reservations.
If Bryce or Boulder Mountain has a storm: check the Bryce conditions page and UDOT before moving. Delay travel when advised. The longer versions give some flexibility, but a spare afternoon is not a guarantee against disruption. If necessary, remove the Capitol Reef extension and rebook the remaining nights. Do not use an unverified back road to preserve the schedule. [17] [14]
If a desired permit is unavailable: retain this itinerary's easy core. Angels Landing requires a permit, but none of the schedules depends on it. A successful application would require replacing activities with a suitably prepared hiking day; an unsuccessful application does not require inventing a new road trip. [19]

Start with seven days for Zion and Bryce. Choose five when time is fixed and the shorter visit matches your expectations. Choose ten when you want Capitol Reef enough to give it two full days. Yes, under the early-arrival assumption here. It gives one full Zion day and a short Bryce visit, plus travel days. If arrival is late, or you want longer hikes and restful mornings, choose seven days or focus the five days on Zion.
Should I add Capitol Reef to a seven-day trip?
You could construct a faster route, but this plan recommends keeping seven days for Zion and Bryce. Adding Torrey means adding both a scenic transfer and a longer return. Ten days lets you spend two full days at Capitol Reef instead of using it mainly as another hotel stop.
Does a national park pass cover the entire trip?
Treat park admission as one budget item alongside lodging, transport, food, parking and any separately booked activities. Can families or travelers with limited mobility use this route?
The bases and transfer sequence are a useful starting point. The activity list still needs adapting to the actual travelers. Easy is a park difficulty rating, not a promise of accessibility.
