Lake O'Hara: Day Bus, Camping, Hut or Lodge? Choose the Right Trip

Compare Lake O'Hara day bus, camping, hut and lodge trips, with booking rules, costs, hiking plans and guidance on unannounced 2027 dates.

Read the article

Choose the day bus for one hiking day, the campground for a tent-based stay, the Lake O'Hara Hut for shared indoor accommodation, or Lake O'Hara Lodge for accommodation with meals. The hut is also widely known as Elizabeth Parker Hut. These are separate booking routes, with different costs, equipment needs and transport arrangements.

If you want several hikes and are comfortable camping, two nights provide an arrival afternoon, one full day and a departure morning. If you want only a lakeshore walk and one moderate objective, a confirmed day-bus reservation may be enough. Choose the overnight format because you want that experience, then organize the surrounding Rockies trip around its dates.

Planning for 2027: the Parks Canada pages checked for this guide still display 2026 campground and day-bus dates. A 2027 launch or draw period was not verified. Consult the separate hut and lodge information in the booking calendar table below. Do not carry old dates into a new booking calendar. [1] [3]

Lake O'Hara lies in Yoho National Park, British Columbia, near Lake Louise and Field. The usual summer visit begins at the highway-side parking area and continues by reserved bus. Walking the access road is possible, but it adds an 11 km approach and an 11 km return before most of the hiking you came to do. [2]

This guide helps you choose a visit, build the days around it and prepare the bookings and equipment. It is not a substitute for the current trail map, conditions report or instructions issued with your reservation.

01

Four Lake O'Hara experiences, four different commitments

Decide how you want to spend the time before deciding which reservation to pursue. A shared hut and a lodge room both put a roof over your head, but the daily routine is different. A campsite provides access to the area across several days, but also adds packing, cooking, food storage and camp setup.

Match the format to the least flexible part of your trip

If your holiday dates cannot move, decide which formats and alternative destinations you would genuinely enjoy. If Lake O'Hara is the main reason for traveling, keep the surrounding accommodation flexible until you have the specific reservation that makes your visit possible.

A family with a large tent should check the campground's pad dimensions before entering a booking rush. A light sleeper should consider whether shared hut accommodation will work. A traveler with only two available nights should address the lodge's minimum stay before comparing its nightly price with camping.

Ask about mobility and boarding requirements directly if anyone in your group needs assistance. A bus ride into the area does not establish that every trail, sleeping arrangement or bathroom is accessible.

Know which booking calendar you are watching

The most consequential booking mistake is monitoring the wrong system. The day bus and campground do not open in the same way. The hut's autumn process is separate again, and a lodge inquiry does not place you in either Parks Canada queue.

Keep the release time in the timezone stated by the provider. Yoho's Parks Canada reservations use Mountain Time even though the park is in British Columbia. If applying from Montréal or another timezone, convert the actual announced date and time rather than relying on a remembered offset. [4]

03

How the Lake O'Hara day-bus draw works

The published process lets an applicant rank up to six inbound date-and-time choices for the required party size. A selected application can produce a temporary offer if enough seats remain. You must then claim and pay for that reservation within the stated deadline, currently 14 days from the draw. An application is not a ticket. [4]

  1. Choose dates you can actually use. Check accommodation, travel commitments and the group's availability before ranking preferences.
  2. Use the real party size. Include everyone the booking instructions require. Do not request spare seats as a speculative backup.
  3. Watch the reservation-account email. Check junk folders and make sure someone can respond while the application is active.
  4. Review the offered date before paying. Compare the new plan with any accommodation already booked, including cancellation charges.
  5. Save the completed confirmation. Record the bus departure, arrival instructions and party details. A payment or application email alone may describe an earlier stage.

After the draw, unreserved and subsequently cancelled seats can return to ordinary reservation inventory. That is a reason to check the official service again, not a promise that your preferred day will become available. Avoid building an entire holiday around an unconfirmed cancellation search. [4]

Choose the bus time with the hike in mind

The Lake O'Hara bus timetable for 2026 lists inbound buses at 8:30 and 10:30 a.m. and several outgoing departures, ending at 6:30 p.m. Recheck the schedule and return arrangements for the season you book. An earlier inbound bus provides more room for orientation, a slower walking pace and a shorter alternative if conditions change. [2]

If you secure a later arrival, shorten the objective. Trying to fit the same long hike into two fewer hours removes the time you may need for route decisions, weather, breaks or a slower group member.

Bring the return instructions with you and confirm them with staff on arrival. Do not plan a route that works only if you move quickly enough to reach the last bus with minutes to spare.

04

Camping, hut or lodge: what changes overnight?

Camping: a small tent and a complete outdoor setup

The campground has 30 sites and a maximum stay of three consecutive nights. Pads measure 2.5 m by 2.5 m, with a maximum of four people and one small four-person tent per site. Check the actual footprint of your shelter, not just the number of people printed on its packaging. [2]

Lake O'Hara camping is a backcountry tent stay reached by bus. Choose equipment you can pack, load and carry within the current baggage rules. Hard-sided coolers, storage bins and loose items are prohibited on the bus. The park also asks campers to leave chairs and hammocks behind. [2]

Expect cooking shelters, food storage and outhouses. Treated well water can be unavailable early or late in the season, so verify the supply before departure and bring an appropriate water plan. A backpacking stove makes meal preparation less dependent on the shared fire facilities. [2]

Reserve a campsite only if you intend to camp. Parks Canada says visitors arriving without a tent will be turned away. A campground reservation is not an alternate way to buy a day-bus seat. [2]

The hut: shared shelter with meals and chores to organize

The ACC calls it Lake O'Hara Hut, also known as Elizabeth Parker Hut, about 500 m from the lake. Arrange the summer bus with the hut reservation. A Fair Access invitation offers an opportunity to book, without guaranteeing particular dates. [5]

ACC huts are shared, user-maintained spaces. Expect communal sleeping, kitchen and living areas, with mattresses and cooking equipment provided. Bring your own sleeping bag, food and personal items, and leave time to clean before departure. A hut booking does not create a private room or a catered stay. [7] [8]

Before paying, confirm the exact nights, occupants, bus booking, charges and arrival instructions. The ACC's general 180-day member and 90-day nonmember booking windows do not replace this hut's summer Fair Access process. Its current booking guide describes that exception explicitly. [6]

Review cancellation terms carefully. The ACC currently treats booking changes as cancellations, with a partial refund more than 15 days before the stay and no refund at 15 days or less. Processing charges and other conditions apply, and the policy excludes refunds for several disruptions, including weather and closures. Use the terms attached to the booking. [9]

The lodge: meals included, with a longer minimum stay

Published lodge rates include meals, afternoon tea, round-trip road transport, taxes and gratuities. Compare those inclusions in the cost section below. [10]

Bookings are made by telephone. Ask about the room or cabin that fits your group, all additional-person charges, dietary needs, bus timings and the complete cancellation terms. Its current policy uses a 60-day notice threshold; do not assume a forecast change will permit a last-minute refund. [10]

Winter is a separate trip: the lodge's own website currently says winter operations are suspended and no services will be available to people skiing in. Use that operator notice when planning, despite the generic winter season described on Parks Canada's trip page. Winter access and avalanche preparation require a separate plan. [11]

05

Can you walk to Lake O'Hara without a bus reservation?

Yes, walking the access road is permitted, but prepare to walk both directions. The road is 11 km each way. Cycling is prohibited, and an outbound bus ride is not guaranteed for a walk-in visitor. Walking in does not create an overnight reservation. [2] [15]

Consider the full day's distance before choosing this option. The road approach may be the largest part of the outing, leaving less time and energy for the basin's trails. A visitor who intended a short lakeshore walk would be choosing a substantially different physical challenge.

ObjectiveListed trail distanceAdd the 22 km road returnPlanning implication
Lake O'Hara Shoreline Trail2.8 km circuitAt least 24.8 kmA short lakeshore outing becomes a long walking day.
Opabin Plateau Circuit5.9 km circuitAt least 27.9 kmThe climb and uneven trail come on top of the road approach.
Lake McArthur circuit8 km circuit from Le RelaisAt least 30 kmRequires substantially more endurance and available daylight.

Distance comparison using Parks Canada's published road and trail lengths.

These are arithmetic planning comparisons, not recorded GPS tracks. They exclude extra connections, detours and movement around facilities. The road and trail distance bases come from the official trip and trail pages. [2] [14]

At an assumed moving speed of 3 to 4 km/h, the road alone takes about 5 hours 30 minutes to 7 hours 20 minutes for the return journey, before breaks. That is an illustrative calculation, not a recommended pace or an estimate of the time needed on steep trails.

For a group that is not prepared for the complete walk, an alternative Yoho hike is the better plan. Do not use the possibility of a spare bus seat to justify an outing you could not otherwise finish.

06

Choose a hike that fits your time, ability and conditions

The photograph that attracted you to Lake O'Hara may have been taken from an exposed alpine route. The area also has trails with more modest objectives. Choose from the current map and conditions, then agree on the outing with the whole group.

TrailOfficial listed distance and elevation gainUse in this guide
Lake O'Hara Shoreline Trail2.8 km circuit; minor ups and downs.Arrival-day orientation or a shorter primary outing. Check footing and any closed sections.
Lake Oesa Trail3.2 km one way; 240 m gain.A potential main objective. Confirm the route's starting point and all approach distance on the map.
Opabin Plateau Circuit5.9 km circuit; 250 m gain. One main outing for a suitable group, with time for the climb and route decisions.
McArthur Pass and Lake McArthur8 km circuit; 310 m gain; starts at Le Relais.A longer choice for the full day of an overnight stay.

Published Lake O'Hara trail dimensions and how to use them.

Distances above reproduce the official trail listings, not total walking from a particular tent or hut bed. Add connecting paths from your overnight base and use the map to avoid counting shared sections twice. [14]

For the first visit, choose one main objective and one shorter option. The decision is easier when the alternative is already agreed: for example, attempt an appropriate plateau walk only if the trail is open and suitable, otherwise keep to an open lower route.

Keep alpine routes out of a default beginner itinerary

Parks Canada distinguishes its alpine routes from ordinary trails and describes exposed terrain, route finding and possible scrambling. A complete Alpine Circuit should not be the automatic recommendation for every successful bus applicant. Snow, ice, visibility and group experience can change what is reasonable. [14]

Also check wildlife restrictions. Odaray Prospect and Plateau have a seasonal closure, and the Odaray Highline has a separate voluntary-use management program. This guide does not use that corridor as the default scenic detour. Follow the current Yoho bulletins and on-site instructions. [17]

On arrival, Le Relais can be useful for local trail information during its operating season. It sells maps, drinks and light snacks on a cash-only basis. Bring your day's food regardless of whether you expect it to be open. [21]

07

Two practical itineraries

These are summer planning examples for suitable conditions. They require the corresponding confirmed reservations and use time allowances estimated for this guide. Check the season's bus times and the instructions on your own confirmation before adopting either schedule.

Option A: a day trip using an early inbound bus

Sleep near Field or Lake Louise the previous night if possible. Parks Canada places the bus parking area about 13 km east of Field and 12 km west of Lake Louise. Check the exact departure location rather than navigating to a pin for the lake itself. [2]

Time or phasePlanWhat to protect
Before 7:45 a.m.Drive to the parking area, park and prepare to check in.7:45 is a recommended arrival target, not an official universal cutoff. Follow your confirmation if it requires earlier arrival.
8:30 a.m.Take the reserved inbound bus.The departure is the fixed appointment; the day's hike is adjustable.
Arrival to about 9:30 a.m.Allow for the ride, orientation, facilities and a conditions check. This is an allowance, not a promised journey duration.
About 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.One appropriate main hike, such as Opabin, with breaks and lunch.Agree on a turnaround point and return time. Shorten the outing if progress or conditions require it.
About 2:30 to 4 p.m.Optional nearby shoreline time, then return to the departure area. This flexible block is the first thing to remove if the main hike runs longer.
4:30 p.m. targetDepart under the return arrangements confirmed with staff.Do not treat a later bus as unlimited hiking time or assume an unconfirmed place.
EveningDrive to nearby accommodation and eat.Avoid a tightly timed onward activity or flight after the outing.

Illustrative day plan using the published 2026 8:30 a.m. inbound and a 4:30 p.m. target departure.

If you receive a 10:30 a.m. inbound reservation, recalculate from that arrival. A shoreline-focused day with a shorter additional walk can be a satisfying use of the visit. The value of a bus ticket does not depend on completing the longest possible route.

Option B: two camping nights and one full hiking day

This version is for a confirmed two-night campground stay. A hut stay can use the same broad rhythm, with its own bus times, arrival tasks and check-out requirements. The lodge needs a separate three-night version under its current minimum.

Arrival day: transport, camp and a short orientation walk

Take the bus assigned in your campground confirmation. Parks Canada's policy tells campers to be at the staging area at least 20 minutes before departure and warns that a missed departure does not come with a seat on another bus. Leave a larger personal margin for parking and unloading. [4]

On arrival, complete the required check-in and campsite setup. Store food and scented items correctly, identify the water supply and cooking area, and prepare the sleep system before heading out.

Use the remaining daylight for a short open route, potentially the shoreline circuit if time and conditions fit. An arrival afternoon is also a chance to assess the group's energy after travel. Save the longest objective for the day with no camp move.

Full day: one principal hike, with time to adapt

Eat breakfast, check the latest conditions and choose the agreed objective. A suitable group might select Lake McArthur or Opabin, without assuming that both need to happen on the same day. Carry lunch, layers and the equipment needed for the actual route.

Plan to return with enough time to prepare dinner and organize tomorrow's departure. A full day gives you more flexibility than a bus day trip, but it does not remove the need for a turnaround decision.

If the higher trail is unsuitable, keep the overnight reservation and change the activity when remaining in the area is appropriate. An open lower walk, time at the lake and a quieter afternoon can preserve the trip. A broader closure requires following the park's instructions.

Departure day: pack first, then use the remaining time

Have breakfast, pack the tent and clear the campsite according to the departure instructions. Keep food accessible only in the permitted way while you wait or take a short walk. Do not assume you can leave bags unattended wherever convenient.

Choose the morning activity only after confirming your outgoing transport and baggage arrangements. Allow time to collect everything and be ready early. Once back at the car, a nearby overnight stay is more forgiving than a long drive immediately following a delayed departure or tiring hike.

What a third night buys

A third campground night adds a second full day between arrival and departure, within the current maximum stay. That can provide another hiking objective or a chance to move activities around ordinary weather changes. It does not guarantee two suitable hiking days, and it increases food, equipment and accommodation commitments.

08

Fit the confirmed date into your wider Rockies trip

Build a movable Lake O'Hara block: the night near the departure point, the visit itself, and the following night. Move that block together when dates change. Shifting only the hike can leave you sleeping too far away before an early bus.

Calendar slotInitial ideaRevised plan
MondayArrive near Field or Lake Louise.Keep the nearby arrival night.
TuesdayProvisional Lake O'Hara day.Use an appropriate open Yoho alternative and remain nearby.
WednesdayOther sightseeing, then move north.Use the confirmed Lake O'Hara reservation and sleep nearby again.
ThursdayContinue the regional route.Depart north, after revising the next accommodation and any timed activity.

Worked example: a confirmed day trip moves one day later.

This change can require an extra nearby night or a shorter stay later in the trip. Calculate that cost before accepting an offered date. If a fixed Jasper booking cannot move, reduce another activity rather than adding a late-night drive simply to preserve every original stop.

Our Banff and Jasper seven-day itinerary covers the broader pattern of bases, shuttles and travel days. A Lake O'Hara overnight stay should replace part of that week or extend it, with the appropriate transport and accommodation changes.

If you do not obtain access

Choose an alternative you would enjoy without describing it as the same experience. Parks Canada's Yoho hiking guide lists the Emerald Lakeshore loop at 5.2 km, while the Lake O'Hara Trails Club points visitors toward alternatives in the Emerald Lake, Yoho Valley and Sherbrooke Lake areas. Check conditions and road access for each. [20] [15]

For an ordinary summer day with appropriate conditions, an Emerald Lake walk and an unhurried meal can fill the day without another major reservation dependency. For a more demanding hike, select a route that matches the group and the available daylight. Do not turn a missed bus reservation into an unplanned endurance test.

As of this guide's late-October check, Yoho reported winter conditions and a seasonal closure of Yoho Valley Road. Those conditions are a reminder to recheck access, not a forecast for next summer. Do not use these summer alternatives as current winter outing recommendations. [16]

09

Compare the complete cost of each format

All figures below are in CAD and reflect pages checked October 30, 2026. They are a planning baseline, not verified 2027 prices or evidence of availability. Keep transport, admission, accommodation and booking charges separate until the provider's final total confirms what is included.

FormatAvailable price informationAdd or verify
Day bus$25.50 per person return transport; $3.50 online reservation charge. The draw application is $10 and nonrefundable. [13] [4]Park admission, travel to the lot, accommodation elsewhere, food and any change/cancellation costs.
CampgroundYoho lists $15 per person per night for backcountry use. Round-trip bus charges are added to the reservation. [13] [4]The applicable reservation charge, admission, meals, gear, travel and nights before or after.
HutThe hut page displays summer peak rates of $60 for members and $70 for nonmembers, subject to change. [5]Obtain the full party-and-night total, bus cost, application charge, taxes and any other fees. Do not treat the displayed rate as a group quote.
LodgeListed 2026 nightly rates for two: $1,055 for a lodge room or $1,495 for the stated cabin categories. [10]Minimum three nights, additional-person charges, admission, travel and anything outside the stated package.

Published costs and the missing items to budget.

Worked example: two adults on the day bus

If one $10 application succeeds and the pair claims the booking online, the published transport-and-booking calculation is 2 × $25.50 + $3.50 + $10 = $64.50. That excludes park admission, food, driving and lodging. If a valid admission pass already covers the visit, do not buy another merely because you booked the bus. [4] [13]

The $10 application charge remains a cost even if the application is unsuccessful. A remaining seat booked after the draw may have a different application-cost history; use the process you actually followed rather than adding a hypothetical draw fee.

Worked example: two adults camping for two nights

The published baseline for camping and return transport is 2 people × 2 nights × $15, plus 2 × $25.50 = $111. Add the confirmed reservation charge and park admission, then meals, equipment, transport to the parking area and any surrounding accommodation. The transport is charged with the campground booking; it is not a second day-use draw to enter. [4] [13]

Reservation-fee discrepancy: Yoho's fee page lists a $12.75 backcountry reservation charge, while Parks Canada's general backcountry policy lists $11.50 online. This guide does not add both or silently choose one. Check the actual Lake O'Hara checkout and keep its itemized total. [4] [13]

Compare the lodge on the same inclusion basis

Multiplying the displayed nightly rates by three gives $3,165 for two in a lodge room or $4,485 for two at the listed cabin rate. Compare the complete package with your camping or hut budget. Confirm the quote for your desired season before paying. [10]

For every format, add an explicit line for the night before an early departure and the journey after the visit. A low camping fee can coexist with substantial flight, car-rental and regional accommodation costs. US visitors should convert using their actual payment method's exchange rate and charges; no USD conversion is assumed here.

10

Prepare for the season and the place you will sleep

Parks Canada describes July through late September as the main hiking period and warns that higher routes can remain snowbound into late June. A running bus does not mean every trail is ready. Start with the current trail report, the weather and applicable closure notices. [2] [16]

GroupWhat to bring
EveryoneConfirmation and identification if required; food and water for the outing; insulating and waterproof layers; suitable footwear; headlamp; first-aid and emergency supplies; map and navigation prepared independently.
CampersA tent that fits the pad; sleeping bag and mat for forecast conditions; stove and fuel; all meals; compliant luggage; a food-storage plan and a checked water supply.
Hut and lodge guestsHut: sleeping bag, food, personal items and access instructions. Lodge: day-hiking equipment and confirmation of meals, transport and room arrangements. Packing for shelter does not replace packing for the trail.

Preparation by visit format.

Food, water and shared facilities

Use the designated cooking and food-storage arrangements and keep wildlife attractants out of sleeping areas. Follow the staff briefing and current park instructions. Do not assume a fire will be available for cooking or that a snack counter replaces your food supply.

For a hut stay, read the ACC's current packing instructions and pre-arrival email. If you have not received essential access information, contact the operator before leaving mobile coverage. The ACC says its pre-arrival email normally arrives seven days before the trip. [6] [8]

Pets and water activities need their own checks

Pets are prohibited on the Parks Canada bus and in the campground. ACC hut rules also prohibit pets. Arrange appropriate care rather than assuming one part of the trip will accommodate an animal because another trail permits leashed dogs. [2] [23]

The current Yoho waterbody order restricts watercraft and angling through March 31, 2027, with limited exceptions described by Parks Canada. Do not interpret that date as a confirmed reopening. Recheck the rule before adding paddling or fishing to a future itinerary; neither is part of this guide's suggested visit. [19]

Leave a plan that works beyond your phone

Tell a trusted person your route, overnight location, expected return and what to do if you are overdue. Prepare navigation and communications for the terrain before departure. Parks Canada notes that satellite devices may be the only communications equipment that works in the backcountry and advises users to understand the device before the trip. [18]

Use the conditions you encounter to decide where to go. A bus booking, hut bed or lodge room secures one part of the trip; it does not certify a hiking route as suitable that day.

12Questions

Frequently asked questions

Are Lake O'Hara reservations open for 2027?

A 2027 Parks Canada campground launch or day-bus draw date was not verified on October 30, 2026. Check the official announcement. The hut and lodge use separate systems, so inspect their current information independently.

Do campers also enter the day-bus lottery?

The campground is a separate reservation process, and Parks Canada adds required round-trip bus charges to the camping booking. Follow that confirmation's departure instructions rather than treating the stay as a day-use draw application.

Can I visit without staying overnight?

Yes. Reserve the day bus or independently assess the full road walk and your intended hike. The latter adds 22 km of return road walking and does not guarantee a ride out.

Is Elizabeth Parker Hut the same as Lake O'Hara Lodge?

No. The hut is ACC shared accommodation; the lodge is a separate operator with rooms or cabins and included meals. Confirmations and transport arrangements are not interchangeable.

Do I need an ACC membership to apply for the hut?

The current Fair Access guidance allows members and nonmembers to apply. Nonmembers need a free portal account. Check the intended season's terms and the rate applicable to each guest.

How many nights should I stay?

Two camping nights give one full day between arrival and departure. Three add another full day, within the current campground limit. The lodge currently requires at least three nights. Choose the duration you can equip, afford and fit into the wider journey.

Does a national-park pass reserve the bus or accommodation?

No. Admission and reservations are separate. Budget for the appropriate pass or admission arrangement alongside the transport and overnight booking.

Can Xavier find or book an available Lake O'Hara reservation?

No. Xavier does not book anything on your behalf and does not check live availability, permits or road conditions. Use the provider's booking service for inventory and purchases.

Conclusion

Pick the Lake O'Hara format you actually want, book it directly with the provider, then organize the surrounding Rockies trip around its dates. Recheck Parks Canada, the Alpine Club of Canada and the lodge for 2027 dates before you commit, because the day bus, campground, hut and lodge each run on their own calendar.
