A seven-day Florida national parks itinerary works best when the Dry Tortugas excursion determines the rest of the week. Secure that transport date first, then arrange Biscayne, Everglades and your overnight bases around it. Driving to Key West does not secure a place on a boat to the park.
This route starts and finishes at Miami International Airport and includes both flight days. Spend three nights in Homestead or Florida City, two nights in Key West and the final night near Miami airport. Visit Everglades on Day 2, Biscayne on Day 3 and Dry Tortugas on Day 5. The long Keys drives each get their own day.
The default suits travelers who want short walks, wildlife observation and boat sightseeing, with optional snorkeling at Dry Tortugas. It uses a regular rental car and hotel accommodation. Research and published price checks are dated October 12, 2026; driving times and the worked accommodation budget are editorial allowances, not live routing or booking quotes.
Book the week in this order
- Find a workable Dry Tortugas transport date. The NPS planning page links the Yankee Freedom ferry and Key West Seaplane Adventures. The worked route uses the ferry on Day 5.
- Check flights and Key West lodging around that date. You need to sleep in Key West before the excursion and again after it. Compare the complete week before committing to restrictive fares or rooms.
- Confirm the Dry Tortugas reservation. A displayed departure or a wait-list request is not a confirmed seat. Read the operator's cancellation terms before payment.
- Reserve the selected Biscayne experience for Day 3. This route uses the morning Heritage of Biscayne Cruise from Homestead. Check the exact product and departure location.
- Complete the remaining hotels and rental car. Put the self-guided Everglades day between arrival and Biscayne. Keep any additional paid tours optional.
If the available Dry Tortugas date falls elsewhere in your vacation, move the two Key West nights and the travel days together. Do not move only the excursion while leaving yourself in Homestead the night before its early check-in.
Match each experience to its actual departure point
The three-park route uses different entrances and transport terminals
| Experience | Departure or approach | Time to reserve | Best preceding base |
|---|---|---|---|
| Everglades: Royal Palm and Flamingo | Homestead entrance via SR-9336; Ernest F. Coe Visitor Center, 40001 State Road 9336 | A full self-guided day, including the return drive | Homestead or Florida City |
| Heritage of Biscayne Cruise | Dante Fascell Visitor Center, 9700 SW 328th Street, Homestead | 9:30 a.m. departure, 3.5 hours; arrive 30 minutes before departure | Homestead or Florida City |
| Dry Tortugas by Yankee Freedom | Key West Ferry Terminal, 100 Grinnell Street | 7 a.m. check-in; published return around 5:30 p.m. | Key West |
| Dry Tortugas by seaplane, optional substitution | Key West Seaplane Adventures, 3471 South Roosevelt Boulevard | The operator's confirmed flight time and check-in instructions | Key West |
These locations come from Everglades directions, the selected Biscayne product, the ferry FAQ and the seaplane operator. Other Biscayne Institute products leave from Coconut Grove or Deering Estate. Their names can sound similar while placing you on a different side of the metropolitan area.
Plan the rest of your Florida week around your booked boat day in Xploreum. Include the terminal address and confirmation time, so changing a hotel does not quietly create an impossible morning.
Seven calendar days, with the travel included
The complete Miami-to-Miami route
| Day | Plan | Driving allowance | Overnight |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Arrive at MIA, collect the car, buy supplies and check in. | 1 hour 15 minutes | Homestead, night 1 of 3 |
| 2 | Royal Palm, Anhinga Trail, Gumbo Limbo, Pa-hay-okee and Flamingo. | 3 hours 30 minutes | Homestead |
| 3 | Morning Biscayne cruise; lunch and Convoy Point afterward. | 1 hour | Homestead |
| 4 | Drive the Keys, stopping at Bahia Honda before Key West. | 4 hours 30 minutes | Key West, night 1 of 2 |
| 5 | Full-day Dry Tortugas ferry excursion. | 30 minutes of local transfers | Key West |
| 6 | Return toward Miami, with a lunch break in Key Largo. | 5 hours | Miami airport area |
| 7 | Return the car and take the flight home. | 30 minutes locally | Departure |
The road-driving allowances total 16 hours 15 minutes: 1.25 + 3.5 + 1 + 4.5 + 0.5 + 5 + 0.5 hours. Ferry time is additional. Traffic, breaks, parking searches and boat check-in are also separate from those driving figures. This arrangement requires two hotel changes after the initial check-in.
Day 1: Arrive in Miami and position for the parks
Choose a flight arriving by midafternoon if possible. Allow time for baggage, immigration where applicable and rental collection, then head to Homestead or Florida City. A property near your route to SR-9336 and the Biscayne visitor center is more useful for this itinerary than a beach hotel across Miami.
Buy breakfast supplies, picnic lunches and drinks for the mainland days. Look at the next morning's weather and download the park directions. Keep tonight free of a prepaid activity: an arrival delay should affect dinner, not an excursion reservation.
Day 2: Everglades from Royal Palm to Flamingo
Leave your accommodation around 7:30 a.m. and approach through the Homestead entrance. The NPS directions page distinguishes this entrance from Shark Valley and Everglades City. They are not linked by a road through the park. This day stays within the Royal Palm and Flamingo corridor.
Start at Royal Palm with the Anhinga Trail, listed at 0.8 mile round trip. Give it about an hour, allowing time to observe rather than expecting any particular animal to appear. Follow with the 0.4-mile Gumbo Limbo Trail for a different, shaded plant community.
Continue to Pa-hay-okee Overlook. The short boardwalk provides a broad view of the landscape and reopened after renovation in winter 2026. Allow half an hour including the drive from the main road and parking.
Continue toward Flamingo for a picnic lunch, the visitor center and time around the waterfront and marina. The official approach is 38 miles from the main entrance, so visiting Flamingo means a substantial out-and-back drive. Plan roughly four hours outside the car across the whole day and return toward Homestead in midafternoon.
This schedule does not require an additional boat tour. If a guided Flamingo excursion is a priority, substitute it for some of the stops rather than adding it to the existing day. If you prefer a shorter road day, turn around after Pa-hay-okee and spend more time at Royal Palm.
Day 3: Biscayne by boat, with the right expectations
Drive to Dante Fascell Visitor Center for the booked morning departure. The Heritage of Biscayne Cruise crosses the bay and includes an island stop selected for conditions, potentially Boca Chita, Elliott or Adams Key. It does not promise Boca Chita on every trip, and it is not a snorkeling or glass-bottom-boat experience.
The published morning schedule returns around 1 p.m. Have lunch, then use the afternoon for the visitor center and Convoy Point Jetty Walk. The NPS gives the walk as 0.8 mile round trip, with boardwalk and gravel surfaces. Spend the rest of the afternoon at your own pace and prepare for the Keys drive.
Travelers who specifically want reef snorkeling should choose a different Biscayne product and rebuild this day around its duration, participant requirements and departure point. A bay cruise cannot be used as a substitute description for a reef trip.
If the boat is cancelled, the visitor center and open mainland trail still provide a Biscayne visit. The Institute's weather policy explains that decisions can occur close to departure and that operator cancellations qualify for a refund. Keep an eye on its messages rather than deciding from the weather at your hotel. Check the separate customer cancellation terms before assuming you can change your mind without a charge.
Day 4: Drive to Key West with one substantial stop
Leave Homestead around 8:30 a.m. and follow US-1 through the Keys. Budget one hour to Key Largo, two hours fifteen minutes from there to Bahia Honda, and another hour fifteen minutes to Key West. Those three legs total the day's four-and-a-half-hour driving allowance.
Use Bahia Honda State Park, at 36850 Overseas Highway, as the main break. Allow around two hours for lunch, the shoreline and the Old Bahia Honda Bridge trail when open. The state park's activity information describes the trail from the Calusa area. Check the current advisory before driving in; access and swimming conditions are separate decisions.
With that stop, target Key West around 3 p.m. Check in, establish the next morning's terminal route and settle the parking arrangement. An Old Town room may let you walk or take a short taxi ride to the ferry. A property farther away can still work, but include its parking charge and morning transfer in the comparison.
Have an early dinner and leave the evening open. The following day begins at the terminal, not when the boat sails.
Day 5: Dry Tortugas and Fort Jefferson
The Yankee Freedom's published itinerary calls for 7 a.m. check-in, 7:30 a.m. boarding and 8 a.m. departure. It lists arrival at Fort Jefferson around 10:30 a.m., departure from the island at 3 p.m. and return to Key West around 5:30 p.m. Actual timing can change with conditions.
Use the island time for Fort Jefferson, lunch and either a suitable swim or snorkeling session, or a slower visit on land. The standard ferry description includes a breakfast snack, box lunch and snorkeling equipment. Confirm dietary arrangements and any participation concerns with the operator before the trip.
Choose your water activity after hearing the day's briefing. Winter is a good season for many mainland walks, but the NPS Dry Tortugas weather guidance explains that winter winds can produce rougher seas. Clear skies do not guarantee calm crossings or good underwater visibility.
Sleep in Key West again. After a full day offshore, adding the Miami drive would turn a memorable excursion into an unnecessarily difficult travel day.
Day 6: Return to Miami without a flight deadline
Leave Key West around 9 a.m. and give the drive back a five-hour allowance. Use a lunch break in Key Largo and add other stops only if the road is moving well. With about an hour for lunch and breaks, aim for the Miami airport area in midafternoon.
The final airport-area night is deliberate. It separates the long US-1 journey from airline check-in. Compare a hotel shuttle with keeping the car until the morning; if returning it tonight, adjust the rental duration and the airport-transfer plan together.
Day 7: Departure
Keep the morning for the flight. Allow the hotel's actual airport transfer time, rental return if still needed, and your airline's required check-in margin. Do not count Day 7 as another full park day simply because the flight leaves in the afternoon.
If Dry Tortugas is sold out or cancelled
There are two different problems. If no suitable seats are available before booking the vacation, you can compare the seaplane or choose the land-based alternative below. If the operator cancels on the day, start with its instructions and the transport you already have. Do not assume the next day's boat has spare capacity.
The ferry's current terms distinguish customer cancellations from operator cancellations. They offer a refund or future rescheduling when the operator cancels, while rescheduling depends on availability. Read the full terms for your purchase, including the substantially earlier deadline for a full customer-requested refund.
A complete Day 5 substitute, with the same Key West hotel and Day 6 return
| Time | Replacement activity | Condition to check |
|---|---|---|
| Morning | Breakfast, then Fort Zachary Taylor from about 10 a.m. to noon. | Use the fort and grounds only when the park is open and local weather permits. |
| Midday | Lunch in Old Town and an unhurried break. | No boat or swimming reservation required. |
| 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. | Key West Museum of Art & History at the Custom House, 281 Front Street. | Confirm opening and any holiday changes. |
| Late afternoon | Historic Seaport walk if conditions are suitable, otherwise return to the hotel. | Keep the existing Key West night and next morning's Miami drive. |
Fort Zachary Taylor provides the historic-fort component on Key West itself. The Custom House museum gives the afternoon an indoor option. Neither visit replaces the offshore national park: this version becomes an Everglades, Biscayne and Florida Keys trip, with Dry Tortugas saved for another time.
For a regional storm or closure order, follow local instructions and revise the travel plan itself. A land-based sightseeing alternative is appropriate for an ordinary cancelled excursion, not a reason to ignore a broader warning.
A dated budget for two adults
The example below combines published excursion prices with explicit spending assumptions. It is a complete planning model in US dollars for two US-resident adults sharing one room and one car. The accommodation, rental, food and transport allowances are chosen inputs, not evidence of rooms or cars available at those prices.
Seven-day budget model, researched October 12, 2026, excluding flights
| Item | Basis | Two-person amount |
|---|---|---|
| Six hotel nights | Assumed totals: 3 x $170 Homestead, 2 x $300 Key West, 1 x $180 near MIA | $1,290 |
| Rental car | Assumed 7 billed days x $65; replace with the complete rental quote | $455 |
| Food | Assumed $90 on six days plus $50 on the ferry day | $590 |
| Fuel | Planning allowance | $110 |
| Parking and tolls | Planning allowance, including hotel and ferry-day parking if needed | $140 |
| State-park and small incidental fees | Planning allowance | $20 |
| Dry Tortugas ferry | 2 x published starting price of $260; selected-date fare may be higher | $520 |
| Heritage of Biscayne Cruise | 2 x published $83 adult fare; check checkout additions | $166 |
| Everglades entrance | One $35 private-vehicle entrance pass | $35 |
| Model subtotal | Sum of the rows above | $3,326 |
Adding a 10% reserve produces $3,658.60, or about $3,660 before flights. Actual hotel taxes, resort charges, rental coverage and ticket checkout fees must fit within your chosen inputs or be added. A reserve does not turn an unpriced fee into an included service.
Price sources are the ferry rates page, Biscayne cruise page and Everglades fee page. Biscayne has no park entrance fee. The Dry Tortugas entrance fee is included in the standard ferry fare, so the model does not add it again.
Non-US residents: the current Everglades rules add $100 for each nonresident aged 16 or older unless covered by an eligible pass. That adds $200 to this example if two adults pay separately. Compare the $250 Non-Resident Annual Pass against your complete trip; its coverage includes the applicable entrance and nonresident fees. Ferry transport and guided excursions remain separate. Confirm any ferry entrance-fee adjustment with the operator and recheck the rules for 2027 travel.
Two worthwhile changes, and what they cost the schedule
Use the seaplane for Dry Tortugas: the operator currently lists a half-day adult fare of $527, with roughly 40 minutes of flying each way and at least two and a half hours on the island. Park admission is additional unless covered. Two adult flights total $1,054 before applicable admission, compared with the $520 ferry starting-price assumption. This is a separately booked alternative with its own weather and availability limits, not a guaranteed rescue when the ferry is cancelled.
Choose Shark Valley instead of the Flamingo corridor: replace Day 2, keeping the Homestead nights. Book with Shark Valley Tram Tours at the US-41 entrance and allow a separate access drive. The NPS visitor page recommends arriving well ahead of a scheduled tram because parking can fill. The operator's rates page and adult product page showed $36 and $45 respectively when researched. Budget $45 per adult provisionally and verify the selected departure's total. This adds up to $90 to the worked budget and changes which part of Everglades you see.
Choose dates around the experience you value most
The Everglades dry-season guidance identifies November through April as a popular period for milder temperatures and generally reduced insect pressure. For this combined route, that favors comfortable mainland exploring, while the offshore day still needs flexibility for wind.
Before departure, revisit the official conditions pages for Everglades, Biscayne and Dry Tortugas. Use your operators' date-specific confirmations for departure times. A timetable from the previous winter is not confirmation of a 2027 service.
Build the week around your confirmed reservations
Copy this starting route into Xploreum:
Start with seven calendar days, arriving and departing at Miami International Airport. Use three nights in Homestead, two in Key West and the last near MIA. Put Royal Palm and Flamingo on Day 2, the morning Heritage of Biscayne Cruise from Dante Fascell Visitor Center on Day 3, the Keys drive on Day 4, Dry Tortugas on Day 5 and the Miami return on Day 6. Ask what I want to change about dates, flights, booked boat seats, budget, swimming and walking. Keep the Key West fort and Custom House fallback, and recalculate bases if the boat date changes.
Make reservations directly with the providers and keep their confirmations with your itinerary. See the Xploreum FAQ for plan-access details, and the related guides to park reservations and entrance fees for the wider planning context.
