Camping Without Buying Gear Near Montréal: What Is Included and What You Still Need

Compare furnished camping near Montréal, La Mauricie oTENTiks, and equipment rentals. See what is included, what to pack, weekend costs, and booking dates.

Read the article

You can try camping near Montréal without buying a tent, sleeping mats, a stove, and a set of outdoor cookware. The practical choices are a furnished ready-to-camp stay, a site-specific oTENTik, or rented equipment used at an ordinary campsite.

Furnished camping can cover shelter and cooking equipment, but you still need to arrange personal bedding and supplies. [5] [10]

With rented equipment, you also book a campsite, collect the gear, and set it up. Plan the rental return alongside your journey home. [19]

For a first weekend, start with the things that affect your comfort most: where you will sleep, how you will stay warm, where you will cook, and how far you must carry your supplies.

This guide compares two specific Sépaq stays close to Montréal, a La Mauricie oTENTik as a longer regional option, and an itemized rental alternative from Montréal. The aim is to help you choose a workable first trip and pack the missing items.

Information checked October 10, 2026, Montréal time. All prices are in Canadian dollars. Published prices and seasons are identified below; no date-specific availability or completed booking is implied.

The quick answer: which camping format fits you?

OptionWhat it takes care ofWhat you still organizeBest fit
Oka, Les Dunes 173, Étoile ready-to-campAn erected shelter, beds, cooking equipment, refrigerator, lighting, and auxiliary heating; parking at the siteBedding, personal supplies, food, towels, and the final booking detailsA first furnished stay with straightforward unloading. [1] [6]
Îles-de-Boucherville, Carrousel 1, Traditional ready-to-campFurnished shelter, mattresses, cooking equipment, refrigerator, lighting, and auxiliary heatingBedding and supplies, plus a 3.5 km approach from the main parking areaAn island stay for travelers comfortable moving their luggage on foot or by bike. [2]
La Mauricie, Rivière à la Pêche oTENTikShelter, mattresses, kitchenware, and outdoor cooking equipmentBedding, pillows, cooler, food, transport, and park admissionA longer regional trip with a furnished camping base. [3] [10]
Locapaq rentals plus an ordinary campsiteThe equipment you specifically reserveCampsite, pickup and return, tent setup, fuel, food, and any omitted itemsTrying conventional tent camping before deciding what to buy. [4] [19]

These choices reduce different kinds of work. If you want to avoid pitching a tent, choose an erected shelter. If you want to learn whether you enjoy sleeping in a conventional tent, renting makes that experiment possible without purchasing the equipment first.

02

What “ready-to-camp” actually includes

Read the numbered unit's technical description, then compare it with the operator's packing list.

Terms such as prêt-à-camper, ready-to-camp, glamping, and oTENTik do not establish a universal inventory. Even properties using the same name can differ in beds, cooking appliances, electricity, food storage, and access.

For the specific stays researched here, the main distinctions are:

ItemOka Étoile exampleBoucherville Traditional exampleLa Mauricie oTENTik example
Shelter and mattressesProvidedProvidedProvided

The comparison combines the exact unit descriptions, park inventories, and official equipment checklist. It does not establish what is supplied at every accommodation with the same product name. [1] [2] [3] [5] [6] [7] [10]

A mattress is not a made bed. A shared shower building is not a private bathroom. Lighting does not establish an outlet for charging your phone. Clarifying those three details can prevent several unnecessary purchases and packing mistakes.

03

1. Oka: an Étoile stay with parking at the site

Oka's Les Dunes 173 is a useful first option when you want a furnished shelter and a simple luggage arrival.

Les Dunes 173 lists three double beds, including a bunk arrangement, accommodates six people, and has parking at the site. [1]

The Étoile format provides an outdoor stove under an awning, cooking equipment, a small refrigerator, lighting, auxiliary heating, chairs, and a picnic table. [6]

You can therefore plan around an existing sleeping and cooking setup. There is no reason to buy a tent or sleeping mats for this stay.

What you still need

Arrange bedding suitable for the forecast, pillowcases, towels, dish towels, food, and a cooler for transporting perishables. Confirm pillow provision and mattress sizes before selecting fitted sheets. The Étoile description identifies nearby water points and shared toilets, sinks, and showers. [5] [6]

For the first dinner, choose something you can prepare with a saucepan or frying pan. Bringing a complicated menu can create equipment gaps that the furnished kitchen otherwise avoids.

Pack food in manageable containers. The refrigerator helps once you have arrived, but your food still needs appropriate storage during the journey.

Arrival and season

Sépaq's ready-to-camp rules, effective from summer 2026, set arrival from 5 p.m. and departure before noon. Plan dinner and the trip from Montréal around that check-in time. If you want to explore the park earlier, confirm admission, parking, and what you can do with your bags before the unit becomes available. [27]

Les Dunes 173's technical card lists April 24 to October 31, 2026, and April 23 to October 31, 2027. Verify the actual dates and services attached to your booking, particularly outside the main summer period. [1]

For a first autumn stay, bedding deserves more attention than the word “heated.” Sépaq warns that auxiliary heating may not keep the interior at even 10°C during unusually cold conditions. Check the forecast and bring appropriate sleeping insulation. [1]

04

2. Îles-de-Boucherville: supplied equipment, with a real luggage journey

Choose Grosbois when the island setting and walking or cycling approach are part of the experience you want.

Carrousel 1 is a Traditional ready-to-camp unit with furnished sleeping space, cooking equipment, a small refrigerator, lighting, and auxiliary heating. Its listed capacity is six people, with a maximum of four adults. [2]

Confirm the mattress layout and sheet sizes for the numbered unit. The park overview and individual card describe the beds differently, so a generic fitted-sheet assumption is unhelpful.

The park overview confirms pillows and a wildlife-resistant box for nonperishable food. It also states that the units use propane and solar energy and have no electrical outlets. Bring a charged power bank if you depend on a phone or another small device. [7]

Plan the 3.5 km approach before packing

Grosbois campground is 3.5 km from the main parking area and is reached on foot or by bicycle. Sépaq provides one baggage trolley per campsite at the Sainte-Marguerite rental centre. [7]

The arrival map estimates approximately 45 minutes walking for the approach. Treat that as an operator estimate, not a measured time for your group while moving a loaded trolley. Allow extra time for collecting the trolley, organizing bags, and finding the unit. [9]

This changes your packing decisions. Several loose shopping bags, a large cooler, and bedding carried under your arm are awkward over that distance. Use closed, manageable bags and distribute the load before leaving the parking area.

Arrange reception and trolley pickup instructions in advance. The ready-to-camp check-in time does not, by itself, establish the rental centre's opening hours.

The ferry you choose changes the journey

The Boucherville ferry lands at Île Grosbois, providing direct access to the campground area. The Promenade Bellerive ferry from Montréal lands at Île Charron, approximately 6 km from Grosbois. These are different arrivals. [8]

Before planning around either one, verify the operating season, both sailing dates, boarding location, luggage or bicycle arrangements, and your return. A seasonal ferry reference does not establish a complete overnight transport plan.

Confirm the seasonal window

Grosbois is a seasonal choice. Its individual accommodation cards and broader park information currently show different season boundaries, so confirm exact unit dates and reception arrangements, especially outside summer. Do not assume a late-October stay is available because a general booking card extends to October 31. [2] [8]

Boucherville can remove much of the equipment burden. The final journey with bedding, food, and personal supplies remains part of the camping experience.

05

3. La Mauricie: a furnished oTENTik for a longer regional weekend

Rivière à la Pêche's oTENTiks are a well-documented option for travelers willing to go farther from Montréal.

Parks Canada places La Mauricie National Park about 200 km from Montréal. For Rivière à la Pêche, follow the Saint-Jean-des-Piles entrance directions. Choosing the correct entrance matters because the park has several access points. [11]

What is supplied

The current La Mauricie inventory lists three single mattresses and one double mattress, kitchenware, saucepans, frying pans, dishes, cutlery, a coffee maker, dish soap and a dishpan, indoor furniture, outdoor chairs, and a picnic table. [10]

The accommodation includes a BBQ with a side burner and propane. Shared showers, toilets, and cooking facilities are nearby. [3]

For this specific stay, you do not need to buy a tent, sleeping mats, cookware, dishes, or a BBQ.

What you must arrange

Bring bedding or sleeping bags, pillows, a cooler, a water container, food, and a dishcloth. [3] Pack personal toiletries and towels alongside your clothing.

Coolers must be stored inside vehicles, and cooking inside the oTENTik is prohibited. [3]

If you plan to arrive without a car, ask the park how you can comply with its food-storage rules before booking.

Do not assume an oTENTik at another Parks Canada location has the same kitchen, fuel supply, or storage rules.

Capacity, check-in, and seasonal services

La Mauricie's current limit is five people, including no more than four adults. A minimum of two nights applies. Check-in is listed from 3 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., with checkout at 11 a.m. [3]

The published Rivière à la Pêche oTENTik season runs May 15 to October 25, 2026. Winter overnight stays are listed separately, from December 18, 2026, through March 28, 2027. The autumn low-season period includes a closure to overnight stays, so this is not continuous year-round accommodation. [12]

Services also have different end dates. Parks Canada links La Boîte des Bois for bedding and camping-equipment rentals, but the published 2026 rental season ends October 12. A later October oTENTik reservation does not establish that rental bedding will still be available. Confirm water and other services for late-season stays. [12] [13]

Winter parking and luggage arrangements differ from summer. Treat a winter oTENTik trip as a separate plan with its own clothing, sleeping system, access, and heating instructions.

06

4. Rent a tent-camping setup in Montréal

Renting is useful when you want to experience ordinary tent camping and find out which equipment you would use again.

Locapaq rents equipment from 1360 boulevard Rosemont, Montréal. Its published inventory allows you to assemble a two-person basket. This is an example built from individual items, not an advertised all-inclusive package. [4]

An itemized rental basket for two adults

EquipmentQuantityPublished daily item priceDaily line total
Firefly two-person tent1$20$20
Solar Eco 3 sleeping bag2$18$36
Insulated Astro sleeping mat2$10$20
Cartridge stove1$4$4
Bugaboo cookware set1$4$4
Total at the listed daily rates$84

The prices come from Locapaq's individual product pages. Its sleeping bags include liners, so the basket does not add a separate liner charge. [14] [15] [16] [17] [18]

The stove's fuel cartridge is not included. The Bugaboo set lists cooking pots, a frying pan, and related equipment, but not a full set of eating plates, cups, and cutlery. Bring suitable items from home or reserve them separately. [17] [18]

Also account for lighting, a cooler and ice, pillows if wanted, food, dish-cleaning supplies, and the campsite.

Ask the renter to match the sleeping bag and mat to the expected overnight conditions and whether you sleep cold. A temperature in a product name is not a promise of comfort at that temperature. This basket illustrates equipment and pricing, not a recommendation for every October or winter night.

Two nights do not automatically equal two rental days

Locapaq defines one rental day as 24 hours from pickup. A booking from Friday at 3 p.m. to Sunday at 3 p.m. is 48 hours. At the listed daily rates, the example basket calculates to $168. [4]

That is a listed-price subtotal, not a completed checkout quote. Confirm taxes, any deposit, item availability, and the final price for your pickup and return times.

If you collect the gear on Thursday to practise pitching the tent, or return it later on Sunday, price that actual interval. Extra preparation time can be worthwhile, but it belongs in the budget.

Reserve pickup as carefully as the campsite

Locapaq asks for bookings at least 24 hours before the rental begins and provides pickup and return instructions after confirmation. Autonomous collection is available under those instructions. If you want a demonstration, confirm a staffed appointment rather than assuming someone will be present. [19]

Before leaving with the equipment, check the tent's poles, fly, pegs, and packing instructions. Ask how to operate the stove and how to handle wet equipment on return.

The rental policy includes cleaning, damage, and late-return charges. It also distinguishes a refund from store credit: cancellations between three weeks and 72 hours before pickup receive 50% store credit, while cancellations under 72 hours are nonrefundable. Read the policy before coordinating a weather-dependent trip. [20]

A specific campsite to pair with the rental

Oka's De l'Anse 178 is an example of an ordinary campsite, with vehicle access, parking, a picnic table, and a fire ring. The pitch has no individual services, but the technical card lists drinking-water points nearby and a sanitation building in the sector. It accepts tents. [21]

The campsite booking provides the place to camp. Your rented tent and sleeping equipment are separate reservations.

07

What does a two-night weekend cost?

Compare the same party size and stay length, then check the tax and date basis.

The following benchmarks assume two adults sharing one accommodation or one tent. They are published rate examples checked in October 2026, not simultaneous quotes for an available weekend.

OptionPrice basisCalculated accommodation or rental subtotalAdditional costs
Sépaq Traditional, as used at BouchervillePublished 2026 lowest low-season Friday/Saturday rate: $127 per night$254 for two nightsTaxes, park admission, transport, food, and any missing personal items
Sépaq Étoile, as used at OkaPublished 2026 lowest low-season Friday/Saturday range: $153 to $168 per night$306 to $336 for two nightsTaxes, park admission, transport, food, and any missing personal items
La Mauricie summer oTENTik$164.50 per night, plus $11.50 online reservation$340.50 for two nights, including applicable taxesPark admission, transport, food, bedding arrangements, and optional activities
Locapaq example rental basket$84 in listed daily item rates, held for exactly 48 hours$168 listed-price subtotalConfirm taxes and any deposit; add campsite, admission, fuel, food, and transport

Sépaq's figures are category rates, not exact quotes for Les Dunes 173 or Carrousel 1. La Mauricie's calculation uses the published accommodation and reservation charges, whose tax treatment is stated in Parks Canada's terms. [22] [23] [24]

Check each subtotal's tax treatment before comparing prices. A tax-inclusive oTENTik subtotal and a Sépaq subtotal before tax are at different stages of the calculation.

Worked example: rentals plus an ordinary Oka campsite

De l'Anse 178 displays a starting price of $36.20 per night. It is not a quote for selected Friday and Saturday nights. [21]

If your chosen two nights are priced at that displayed starting rate:

  • Campsite: 2 × $36.20 = $72.40.
  • Example rental basket for 48 hours: $168.
  • Combined listed-price subtotal: $240.40.

Add Oka's accommodation taxes, park admission, stove fuel, food, ice, and transport. Oka confirms that accommodation taxes and admission are additional. [26] Confirm Locapaq's tax treatment and final rental charge before combining the amounts.

This calculation shows how to build the budget. It does not establish a $240.40 complete camping holiday or guarantee that the campsite is available at that rate.

Park admission is separate

Sépaq's posted daily rate, effective May 1, 2026, is $10.30 per adult aged 18 or older, taxes included. Children 17 and under enter free but still need access authorization. Accommodation does not remove the admission requirement. Confirm the admission coverage billed for your actual arrival and departure dates. [25]

La Mauricie uses Parks Canada fees and passes, rather than Sépaq admission. Its posted standard adult daily admission is $10, with a $19.50 family/group option for an eligible party arriving in one vehicle. A valid existing pass may change what you need to buy. [23]

The two operators' passes are different products. Choose the one that applies to your destination.

Build your own complete total

Use:

Weekend total = accommodation or campsite + rentals + taxes and booking charges + admission + transport + food and consumables + optional activities.

Add any missing personal equipment. Remove items already included, borrowed, or owned.

Do this before deciding that the cheapest pitch produces the cheapest weekend. The rental basket, collection trip, and return deadline can change the comparison. For a family sharing a furnished unit, the shelter price may also be spread across more people, within the unit's actual occupancy rules.

08

The packing list you still need

Start with the confirmed accommodation inventory. Then arrange the following through items you already own, borrowing, or appropriate rentals.

Sleeping and warmth

  • Bedding or sleeping bags appropriate to the forecast.
  • A sheet or mattress covering that fits the actual bed.
  • Pillows if not supplied, plus pillowcases.
  • Dry sleep clothing, warm layers, and spare socks.
  • A waterproof way to keep bedding dry during the approach.

For a furnished stay, household bedding may be practical when suitable for conditions. For tent camping, discuss the sleeping bag and mat together with the renter. Borrowing a warm bag while using an unsuitable mat can still leave the sleeping setup incomplete.

Sépaq's packing checklist distinguishes supplied ready-to-camp equipment from the bedding and personal belongings guests must bring. [5]

Food and cooking

Bring your meals, snacks, drinking bottles, a water container if needed, and whatever keeps perishables appropriately cold during transport.

Match the menu to the supplied equipment:

  • A furnished unit with pots and dishes can support a simple cooked meal.
  • A small rented stove and cookware set require you to check pot sizes and eating utensils.
  • A BBQ with a side burner can support several cooking methods, but you still need food, seasonings, and any recipe-specific tools.

Plan the first meal so it works even if unloading takes longer than expected. Keep breakfast and checkout-day lunch straightforward.

Check how food and coolers must be stored at the exact campground. Use provided wildlife-resistant storage where directed, and follow the park's instructions.

Clothing, washing, and light

Bring a rain layer, suitable footwear, a warm layer, personal medication, toiletries, a towel, a dish towel, a headlamp or flashlight, and charging arrangements that fit the unit.

A headlamp is useful even when the shelter has lights. You still need to find the washroom, move around outside, or manage an arrival after daylight.

Carry a small first-aid kit and save the campground map and booking instructions for use without reception. Xploreum's camping checklist can help you review personal items without duplicating the equipment your stay provides.

Campfires are optional

A fire ring does not establish that fires will be permitted on your dates or that firewood is included. Check the current restrictions and the operator's wood rules.

Prepare meals with the approved cooking setup rather than making dinner depend on a campfire.

Use portable camping stoves and BBQs outdoors as directed. Health Canada identifies dangerous carbon-monoxide exposure from outdoor fuel-burning equipment used in enclosed areas, including tents. Do not bring a cooking stove inside to warm the shelter. [31]

09

Plan the last segment of the journey

A destination can be close to Montréal while still having a demanding last segment.

At Oka's researched furnished unit, parking at the site supports straightforward unloading. At Grosbois, the approach includes a substantial walk or bike ride. At La Mauricie, the correct park entrance and seasonal access arrangement determine where your car and bags go. [1] [9] [11]

Before booking, establish:

  1. The exact arrival point and where overnight parking is permitted.
  2. The distance and surface between parking or the landing and your unit.
  3. How bedding, a cooler, and personal bags will travel that distance.
  4. Reception, key collection, and trolley arrangements.
  5. The reverse journey on checkout day.

If you do not have access to a car, confirm a complete outward and return connection. A park day-trip shuttle does not automatically support an overnight stay, and a ferry needs to operate on both travel dates.

For families, include the children's walking ability and the adult carrying load in the decision. Xploreum's family camping guide can help you adjust the plan to the group.

10

Booking rules and the summer 2027 calendar

Plan around minimum stays

Sépaq's camping FAQ states that ready-to-camp bookings require at least two consecutive nights, with some periods requiring more. The published 2027 tariff includes selected holiday periods with a three-night minimum. [28] [22]

A one-night plan may therefore require a different product or operator. An ordinary campsite's booking rules can differ from the furnished unit beside it.

Summer 2027 Sépaq reservations open in November

Sépaq states that summer 2027 camping and ready-to-camp reservations for its Québec national parks and tourist establishments open on November 7 and 8, 2026.

Confirm the destination-specific opening slot when it is published. An exact day and time for Oka or Boucherville was not established in the sources checked for this article. These dates do not govern Parks Canada reservations. [29]

Sépaq has already published 2027 category rates. For example, its Traditional ready-to-camp peak-summer Friday/Saturday rate is $165 per night, so two applicable nights calculate to $330 before tax and park admission. This is a planning benchmark for the named tariff period, not a held reservation. [22]

Before the opening, shortlist acceptable units, dates, and alternatives. Confirm bed layout, luggage access, and minimum stay while you have time to compare them.

Check cancellation rules across every reservation

For Sépaq ready-to-camp, the current product-specific terms allow cancellation through the stated five-day-before-arrival threshold with a $7 fee plus tax; at four days or less, no refund applies. Use the operator's date table to identify the actual deadline for your arrival day. [30]

Equipment rentals and accommodation can have different cancellation terms. If you book both, record both deadlines. A refundable room does not automatically make the equipment refundable.

Keep your accommodation confirmation, equipment inventory, transport arrangement, and pickup instructions together.

11

A relaxed first weekend

For a two-night furnished stay at Oka, keep the plan simple.

Before Friday: Confirm the unit, bedding, cooking equipment, forecast, admission, and current alerts. Pack one straightforward dinner and the next morning's breakfast. Put bedding and food where they can be unloaded easily.

Friday: Travel with enough time for reception and the 5 p.m. ready-to-camp check-in. After collecting access instructions, locate the water point and washroom, check the supplied equipment, and make the beds. Eat, take a short walk if conditions allow, and settle in.

Saturday: Choose one main outing that fits the weather and your group's energy. Leave time for breakfast, food preparation, and a comfortable return. You do not need a full schedule to find out whether you enjoy camping.

Sunday: Eat, clean the cooking area, pack bedding, and leave the unit before noon. If you have rented equipment, build the trip back around the return deadline and cleaning instructions. [27]

For Boucherville, add the trolley and walking journey at both ends. For La Mauricie, use its own check-in, checkout, and seasonal instructions. For rented tent camping, add daylight and time for pitching, packing, and dealing with wet equipment.

Build your first Xpedition around what is already provided

Start with a place to sleep and an inventory you understand. Arrange the missing bedding, food, and personal items, then give yourself enough time to arrive and settle in.

Camping is not the only way to try a first outdoor weekend. Outdoor weekends from Montréal compares three two-day trips with inns and hotels, and first-time snowshoeing in Montréal covers the winter version with rented equipment.

Tell Xavier your dates, party size, starting point, transport, and preferred camping format. Xploreum can help organize mapped places into a day-by-day Xpedition and refine the plan through conversation. Add the confirmed accommodation and equipment details as you make your bookings. [32]

Try this prompt:

13Questions

Frequently asked questions

Can I camp near Montréal without owning any camping equipment?

Yes. The researched furnished stays supply shelter and sleeping surfaces, and rental providers can supply tent-camping equipment. You still need to arrange the personal items and consumables omitted from the exact inventory. Borrowing suitable bedding and using household items can reduce purchases further. [5] [10] [14] [15] [16]

Does a campsite reservation include a tent?

An ordinary pitch such as Oka's De l'Anse 178 is a place to set up your equipment. An erected shelter is a different accommodation product. Check that your reservation actually names the ready-to-camp unit or oTENTik you intend to book. [21]

Do ready-to-camp stays include bedding?

Not in the stays compared here. Bring suitable bedding; check the unit's bed sizes and pillow provision before packing. [5] [3]

Which option is simplest for a first attempt?

For the specific models in this guide, Oka's furnished unit combines supplied equipment with parking at the site. That makes it a useful starting point if your priority is a straightforward arrival. Boucherville suits a group that wants the island approach; renting suits a group that wants to practise conventional tent camping. This is a practical judgment based on the arrangements described above.

Can I use a heated ready-to-camp unit in cold weather?

Follow the unit's operating season and sleeping-equipment guidance. Auxiliary heating does not establish indoor hotel temperatures. Confirm the expected conditions and bring suitable bedding; winter accommodation requires its own preparation.

Is renting always cheaper than a furnished stay?

No single price answers that question. Compare the whole party, the real rental duration, campsite charges, admission, taxes, and transport. Also account for what you can borrow and how much equipment the furnished unit already provides.

What if I want to bring a dog?

Check your exact accommodation. The Oka unit and De l'Anse pitch prohibit pets, and La Mauricie prohibits pets inside its oTENTiks. [1] [21] [3] Pet dogs are also prohibited at Grosbois campground, where the Boucherville stay is located. [33]
