A good outdoor weekend from Montréal needs a second day worth staying for, a comfortable place to sleep, and a return that leaves you ready for Monday. A famous trail alone does not settle those questions.
Choose Oka for two manageable park walks and a short change of scene; Mont-Orford and Magog for a woodland walk followed by a wetland morning and town comforts; or Mont-Tremblant's La Diable sector for a more committed hiking weekend with a mountain viewpoint and shorter waterfall walks. The plans below each use two days, one overnight stay, and a car.
They are designed for snow-free conditions from late spring through autumn, when the named routes and their access roads are open. They do not assume summer swimming, boat rentals, gondolas, or seasonal restaurant service. In winter, rebuild the route, equipment, and timing around winter operations.

Compare the complete weekends
| Weekend | Saturday's main outing | Sunday's main outing | Overnight format used here | Why choose it? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Oka | Calvaire d'Oka, 4.4 km return. [5] | La Grande Baie, 4 km loop. [5] | An inn room in Oka. | A compact break with two distinct walks and a relatively modest travel commitment. |
| Mont-Orford and Magog | La Boucle des Trois-Étangs, 5.5 km loop. [8] | A flexible walk at the Marais de la Rivière-aux-Cerises. | A hotel room or kitchenette unit in Orford or Magog. | The easiest pairing to adapt around different interests, an indoor pause, and meals. |
| Mont-Tremblant, La Diable sector | La Roche, 5.4 km return. [14] | The short Chutes-Croches lookout walk and, if suitable, La Chute-du-Diable. | A room or self-catering suite in the Mont-Tremblant area. | A more substantial first-day hike with a deliberately shorter second day. |
The overnight properties named later are concrete examples to investigate. None is represented as available at a particular price on your dates. Before committing, confirm that a one-night booking is offered, that the room suits everyone, and that the total includes all mandatory charges.
How far are these places from Montréal?
Sépaq publishes reference distances of 61 km to Oka's discovery and visitor centre, 128 km to Mont-Orford's Lac-Stukely sector, and 138 km to Mont-Tremblant's La Diable sector. These are destination reference distances, not a measurement from your front door or the total driving for the weekend. [1] [2] [3]
Your route also includes the hotel, meals, the actual trailhead, and travel between activities. In a large park, arriving at the entrance still leaves part of the journey ahead.
Use your departure address and exact destinations to calculate the drive. Check Québec 511 for road conditions, closures, and works before leaving and before returning. The sample plans start with a target arrival rather than an invented universal driving time. [4]
Plan 1: Oka, with time for the park and the overnight stay
Oka is a good choice when the overnight itself is part of the experience. You can walk, stop for lunch, settle into a room, and wake up for another outing without making a long drive the centre of the weekend.
It also deserves an honest budget question: would you enjoy a night away enough to pay for it? If you mainly want one walk, Oka can become a day trip. Choose the overnight because a slow evening and another morning outdoors appeal to you.
Saturday: Calvaire d'Oka
Start at the Calvaire d'Oka parking area. Sépaq lists the trail as easy, 4.4 km return, with a published walking time of 1 hour 20 minutes. It leads toward the historic chapels and viewpoint. [5]
Allow about 2 to 2.5 hours at the trail, including preparation, pauses, photographs, and the walk back. That is our suggested block. Increase it if your group's usual pace requires more time.
An out-and-back route makes an early return easy to understand: turn around along the route you already know. Decide after the first part whether everyone is comfortable with the surface, slope, temperature, and remaining distance. A published easy rating still needs to fit the person doing the walk.
Carry lunch or identify an open place in Oka before departure. Keep enough food with you that a closed kitchen does not turn the afternoon into a search for lunch.
Find the correct park entrance
The main park entrance is on Route 344, Chemin d'Oka. Sépaq identifies a separate seasonal entrance at the western end of Autoroute 640 for beach access, with that approach closed from November 1 through April 30. For the Saturday walk, save the Calvaire parking point itself. For Sunday, save the Grande Baie reception point. [1]
Those saved locations matter more than a single pin labelled Oka National Park. Do not let a navigation app substitute the beach entrance for your intended trailhead.
Where to sleep
L'Auberge de l'Abbaye d'Oka is an example of an off-park inn, at 1600 Chemin d'Oka. The operator describes guest rooms within the former monastery. Check the room category, bathroom arrangement, access requirements, meals, arrival time, and cancellation terms in the actual booking. [6] [7]
The inn and the national park are separate destinations. This itinerary assumes a room-only booking and purchases park access independently. If your selected package includes park passes, use the package's written inclusions when calculating your total.
An inn room also changes what you need to pack. You still need walking equipment and weather layers, but you are not assembling a campsite. A property with dinner or breakfast available may simplify the evening; confirm both availability and whether those meals are included.
If staying inside the park appeals more, investigate the available accommodation separately. Sépaq's camping FAQ says a single Friday or Saturday night can be reserved only from 72 hours before arrival, starting at 9 a.m., and a booking made further ahead needs at least two nights. That does not fit the advance one-night model used here without changing the trip. [20]
Sunday: La Grande Baie
After breakfast and checkout, head to the Grande Baie reception area. The named La Grande Baie loop is 4 km, rated easy, with a published one-hour walking estimate. The shorter L'Érablière loop is 1.3 km from the same reception area and gives you a smaller option. [5]
Give the morning 1.5 to 2 hours for the main walk and pauses. Use more time if you enjoy watching the wetland or if your group moves slowly. Keep the route inside your workable return window rather than trying to fill every minute before lunch.
The contrast with Saturday is the reason to stay: one day has the Calvaire viewpoint and built heritage; the other can focus on a quieter wetland setting. You do not need a third attraction to make the two-day structure complete.
Oka schedule
| Time | Saturday | Sunday |
|---|---|---|
| Before departure | Breakfast at home; confirm park access, lodging, weather, and lunch. | Breakfast; pack and check out according to your booking. |
| Around 10:00 am | Arrive at Calvaire parking and prepare. | Aim to reach the Grande Baie reception area after checkout. |
| Late morning | Allow 2 to 2.5 hours for the outing. | Allow 1.5 to 2 hours for the walk, or choose the shorter alternative. |
| Early afternoon | Lunch and an unhurried transition to Oka. | Lunch, then check the drive home. |
| Afternoon | Check in at the confirmed time; rest or enjoy a separately verified local stop. | Leave early enough for your preferred arrival home. |
| Evening | Dinner and a relaxed overnight stay. | Unpack and dry equipment. |
The times are planning targets. Move them to match the actual drive and the inn's rules. Sépaq publishes shorter park hours from mid-October through April and requires vehicles to leave the parking areas before closing. Check the current schedule for the specific date. [1]
Plan 2: Mont-Orford and Magog, a varied weekend with an easier second day
This is our preferred pairing when the group wants nature, a comfortable room, and room to change the plan. The Saturday walk stays within Mont-Orford's Lac-Stukely sector. Sunday shifts to the Marais de la Rivière-aux-Cerises, so the second morning has a different character.
Saturday: La Boucle des Trois-Étangs
Go to Le Cerisier Discovery and Visitors Centre, 200 Chemin du Camping, Orford, in the Lac-Stukely sector. This is distinct from the Lac-Fraser entrance and the ski resort. [2]
Sépaq lists La Boucle des Trois-Étangs as a 5.5 km loop, rated easy, with 50 metres of elevation change and a published walking time of two hours. The route follows the cycling path past three ponds and is listed as suitable for large-wheel strollers. Its summer walking use closes from December 1, depending on trail conditions. [8]
Allow 2.5 to 3 hours for the walk and stops, plus arrival time and lunch. Start with an agreement about whether the group wants to complete the whole loop. If the full distance is unsuitable, ask at reception about a shorter permitted out-and-back and measure that route separately.
A path used by more than one activity needs shared attention. Keep the group together without blocking the full width, look before stopping, and let faster users pass where there is room. Follow the current signs for permitted activities and route direction.
Le Cerisier offers information and visitor services. Its current autumn schedule changes during October, and food service is described as dependent on conditions. Carry your lunch so the day does not depend on a particular counter being open. [2]
Where to sleep
Espace 4 Saisons, at 4940 Chemin du Parc, Orford, is one concrete hotel option. The property distinguishes ordinary rooms, lofts with kitchenettes, and suites with full kitchens. Choose the actual category that matches your meal plan rather than assuming every room is self-catering. [9] [10]
Its current FAQ gives 4:00 pm check-in and 11:00 am checkout, with parking included for guests. It also lists an indoor/outdoor heated pool and two on-site restaurants, whose operating hours should be checked separately. Those features can help a wet afternoon, subject to availability during your stay. [9]
For a one-night visit, there is little value in planning an elaborate meal that requires buying a large collection of ingredients. A kitchenette can still help with breakfast, hot drinks, and preparing Sunday's lunch. A standard room may be the better purchase if you intend to eat out.
The model below assumes lodging without park passes. If a special offer includes admission, breakfast, or a meal credit, subtract the duplicated spending from the appropriate budget line. A meal credit should be valued according to what you can actually use within its terms.
Sunday: the Marais de la Rivière-aux-Cerises
Use 69 Chemin Roy, Magog, for the interpretation centre and surrounding trail network. The operator describes a mix of gravel routes and raised boardwalks, with free trail access. The Pionnier trail is listed at 1.9 km, including a boardwalk section, and as accessible to manual and powered wheelchairs. [11]
Choose your actual route on the current map at arrival. The published length of one named trail does not automatically equal the distance from your parking place and back. For this plan, set a 60 to 90 minute walking window and choose a return that fits it.
The interpretation centre adds a useful indoor element. Its published schedule is Wednesday through Sunday, 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, from Labour Day to Québec's June national holiday, and daily 10:00 am to 4:30 pm during the summer period. General entry is free. Confirm any exceptional closure or separately ticketed activity. [12]
Allow time to read the displays after the walk, especially if some people prefer less walking. This is a better shared morning than asking everyone to complete a second long trail simply because you have already paid for a hotel.
Parking is a separate expense. The City of Magog publishes $3 per hour, up to $15 per day, for a regular car in the Marais parking zone. The worked budget allows three paid hours, or $9 per vehicle. Check the signs and pay for the correct zone. [13]
Orford and Magog schedule
| Time | Saturday | Sunday |
|---|---|---|
| Morning | Drive to Le Cerisier, targeting an arrival around 10:00 to 10:30 am. | Have breakfast, pack, and leave the room by its checkout time. |
| Late morning | Allow 2.5 to 3 hours for the Trois-Étangs outing. | Reach the Marais; choose a mapped walk lasting about 60 to 90 minutes. |
| Early afternoon | Picnic and change wet layers if necessary. | Visit the interpretation centre if open, then have lunch. |
| Afternoon | Transfer to the hotel and check in from the confirmed time. | Start the return after checking road conditions. |
| Evening | Dinner and a quiet stay; use hotel facilities if available. | Aim for a comfortable arrival home with time to unpack. |
If rain makes Saturday's trail unattractive, you can swap the two daytime plans, provided opening hours and tickets allow it. Move the park admission to the day you actually visit rather than buying two days automatically.
Plan 3: Mont-Tremblant, staying with the La Diable sector
This weekend suits a group that wants a more demanding first-day walk and accepts more local driving. Its strongest feature is a deliberate contrast between the main Saturday hike and short Sunday waterfall outings.
Keep the park sector consistent
Sépaq identifies La Diable, Pimbina-Saint-Donat, and L'Assomption as separate access sectors. This itinerary uses La Diable throughout. The La Diable Visitors Centre is at 3824 Chemin du Lac-Supérieur, while the Discovery Centre by Lac Monroe is farther inside the sector. [3]
Save the Discovery Centre for Saturday's trail start, not just the mailing address of the national park. Include the onward park drive when setting your arrival time.
Likewise, a hotel near the resort village is not automatically beside the national-park trailhead. Before selecting accommodation, plot the hotel-to-Discovery-Centre journey and Sunday's return to the park. The extra local journeys can matter more than a modest difference in the headline room price.
Saturday: La Roche
The official trail table lists La Roche at 5.4 km return, rated intermediate, starting from the Discovery Centre. The published walking estimate is two hours. Give this itinerary about three hours for walking and pauses, then add lunch and the drive to your accommodation. [14]
The larger allowance does not change the trail's difficulty. Decide whether the ascent, surface, and distance fit everyone before booking the weekend around it. If some people want a much shorter day, choose a different shared route or use the Orford/Magog plan.
Avoid adding another summit merely because the first walk finished ahead of schedule. An early finish gives you time to eat, settle into the room, and enjoy the overnight you paid for. It also leaves useful flexibility if the return drive inside the region is slower than expected.
Where to sleep
Le Grand Lodge Mont-Tremblant, at 2396 Rue Labelle, is an example of an off-park overnight base. Its accommodation page distinguishes rooms from suites, with full kitchens listed for the suites. Check the specific unit and the trip to the park before choosing it. [15] [16]
The property's current rules list 4:00 pm arrival and 11:00 am departure. A refundable security preauthorisation is different from the cost of the room, although it can affect the credit available during your trip. The booking also needs to account for any mandatory stay charge. [17] [18]
Use the final booking total when comparing properties. A kitchen, convenient parking, and an appropriate room layout may be useful, but they do not make a distant room the best base for every itinerary.
If you choose accommodation closer to Lac-Supérieur, rerun the weekend distances and costs. If you choose a park cabin, check the exact unit location, minimum stay, equipment list, and access charges. A listing somewhere inside the park is not sufficient to establish proximity to La Roche.
Sunday: shorter waterfall outings
After breakfast, pack and check out before returning to the park. The official short route to the Chutes-Croches lookout is 720 metres return, starting at its own parking area, about 5 km north of the Discovery Centre. This is distinct from the much longer loop carrying the same waterfall name. [14]
If the morning still has room, continue to La Chute-du-Diable, listed at 1.6 km return from its separate parking area, about 7 km north of the Discovery Centre. Both are rated easy in the published table. [14]
Our suggested block is about 2 to 2.5 hours for both stops combined, including the local drive, parking, walking, and pauses. This is an editorial allowance. You can do only the first stop and still have a complete Sunday.
Stay within the established viewpoints and permitted routes. A waterfall outing should not include improvising a closer approach over wet rocks. Check current closures before leaving your room and again at the trailhead.
Mont-Tremblant schedule
| Time | Saturday | Sunday |
|---|---|---|
| Before departure | Confirm sector access, weather, lodging, meals, and the full route to the Discovery Centre. | Breakfast, packing, and checkout. Save both waterfall parking points. |
| Around 10:30 am | Target arrival at the Discovery Centre, allowing additional preparation time. | Reach the first waterfall parking area at a time compatible with checkout and the local drive. |
| Late morning to early afternoon | Allow about three hours for La Roche, then lunch. | Use a 2 to 2.5 hour block for the two short outings, or shorten it to one. |
| Afternoon | Drive to the hotel; check in at the confirmed time. | Have lunch and begin the journey home while keeping a generous margin. |
| Evening | Dinner and rest. | Unpack and prepare for the week. |
The Discovery Centre and other facilities have their own seasonal schedules. An open trail does not establish that food, equipment rental, or every indoor facility will be available. Take what you need for the walking day and check current services separately. [3]
What will the complete weekend cost?
First, separate verified charges from spending choices
Sépaq's current daily admission is $10.30 per adult aged 18 or older, including tax. Children aged 17 and younger have free admission but still need the applicable access authorisation. Accommodation inside a national park does not automatically include the access charge. [19]
For the itineraries above, two adults need four adult park-days at Oka and Mont-Tremblant, or $41.20, and two adult park-days at Mont-Orford, or $20.60. Sunday at the Marais has no trail admission charge. These calculations assume neither person holds an applicable annual pass and no accommodation package provides the admission. [19] [11]
The named overnight properties were checked as accommodation options, not booked or priced for your dates. The following model deliberately uses the same lodging and food allowances across all three destinations, so you can see what the travel and activity structure adds.
A transparent example for two adults sharing one car
The example assumes:
- One room for one night: $240 total, with all lodging taxes and mandatory property charges already inside that allowance. This is a chosen budget input, not a quoted rate at any named property.
- Food and snacks: $160 for two people, covering Saturday lunch and dinner, Sunday breakfast and lunch, and snacks, with the intended tax and tip spending included.
- Fuel: 8.5 litres per 100 km at an assumed $1.75 per litre. Neither figure is a claim about your vehicle or the current pump price.
- Total weekend driving allowances of 180 km, 340 km, and 440 km, respectively. These are model inputs for complete itineraries, not measured route distances. Replace them with your own routes before budgeting.
- A $30 discretionary reserve for small changes or additional parking. It is spending capacity, not a mandatory fee.
| Cost for the two-person group | Oka | Orford and Magog | Mont-Tremblant |
|---|---|---|---|
| One-night lodging allowance, including mandatory charges | $240.00 | $240.00 | $240.00 |
| Food and snacks allowance | $160.00 | $160.00 | $160.00 |
| Park admission under the stated assumptions | $41.20 | $20.60 | $41.20 |
| Fuel calculated from the stated model inputs | $26.78 | $50.58 | $65.45 |
| Marais parking for three hours | $0.00 | $9.00 | $0.00 |
| Discretionary reserve | $30.00 | $30.00 | $30.00 |
| Illustrative total for two | $497.98 | $510.18 | $536.65 |
| Illustrative share per adult | $248.99 | $255.09 | $268.33 |
Fuel is calculated as distance × 8.5 ÷ 100 × $1.75, then rounded to cents. The final per-person amount is also rounded. The example assumes you already have the car; rental charges, insurance choices, charging costs for an electric vehicle, and travel from outside Montréal must be added or substituted as appropriate.
The model does not include a summer beach visit. Sépaq identifies extra parking charges for supervised beaches at Oka and Mont-Orford, so price that addition separately if you change the itinerary. [19]
What the model tells you
Under these assumptions, the difference between Oka and Mont-Tremblant is $38.67 for the group. A single $80 difference in the final hotel total would be larger. These are calculations within the model, not a finding that either destination is always cheaper.
That is why accommodation deserves early attention. Search the same dates, occupancy, bed requirements, cancellation flexibility, and meal inclusions. Compare the final payable totals, then replace the $240 row.
Keep refundable deposits outside the expected trip-spending total, but make sure your payment method can accommodate them. Conversely, include nonrefundable booking fees and mandatory resort or stay charges in the lodging total. If a package already covers breakfast or admission, remove the duplicate expense rather than paying for it twice in your spreadsheet.
Choose according to the people travelling
For a low-pressure first overnight outdoors, choose Oka. Its two walking days can each become shorter without undoing the entire weekend. The overnight is an optional comfort purchase, so it is also the easiest plan to turn into a day trip if the room cost is too high.
For a group with varied interests, choose Orford and Magog. One main woodland route, a flexible wetland visit, a free interpretation centre, and hotel options create several ways to spend time together. The Sunday structure is particularly useful when some people want less walking.
For people who specifically want the La Roche experience, choose La Diable. Accept the driving and choose accommodation with the trailhead journeys in mind. Keep Sunday shorter so the weekend does not end with another demanding walk before the drive.
For mobility needs, check the precise trail segment, parking, toilets, room access, and current surface conditions. A route's easy label, a stroller notation, and wheelchair suitability answer different questions. Ask the operator about the combination you need rather than applying one label to the whole destination.
Keep the departure plan as concrete as the trail plan
On Sunday, work backward from the time you want to be home. Subtract the actual return-drive estimate, a traffic margin you are comfortable with, lunch, the local drive from the final activity, and the walking block.
If the result requires an implausibly early departure from the hotel, shorten the morning. Do not rely on an unconfirmed late checkout or on arriving home immediately after the navigation app's best estimate.
Pack the car for checkout before starting Sunday's activity. Keep the day pack, food, water, and dry layers reachable without unpacking all the luggage. Decide where to put wet footwear and clothing so the final drive stays comfortable.
Before each outing, check the destination forecast through Environment and Climate Change Canada and current park notices. Conditions at home are not a substitute for conditions at the trail. Sépaq advises choosing activities to suit your abilities, carrying appropriate equipment, and sharing your itinerary with someone. [21] [22]
Carry a map, charged phone, light source, weather layers, water, food, and personal essentials. Our day-hike packing guide can help with the walking kit. Add what the accommodation requires and avoid assuming that a kitchenette provides every ingredient or consumable.
Shape the weekend around your Xplorers
Tell Xavier where you are leaving from, your dates, your room budget, whether you have a car, and the walking time everyone would enjoy. Xavier can help refine a day-by-day Xpedition through conversation and show planned places on a map. [23]
Try: “Compare Oka, Orford and Magog, and the La Diable sector for two adults with one car and one overnight stay. We want no more than three hours of walking per day, a private room, and a relaxed Sunday return. Keep lodging, admission, food, and transport separate in the budget.”
Use the actual booking total and current operating information to finish the plan, then leave enough space to enjoy the overnight.

Frequently asked questions
Which outdoor weekend from Montréal is best for a first overnight trip?
Oka is our choice when the priority is a compact trip with manageable walking blocks. Orford and Magog is our choice when the group wants more variety and an indoor element. Choose Mont-Tremblant when the La Diable hiking experience itself justifies the extra movement within the region.
Can these trips be done without a car?
These specific two-day itineraries assume a car for the trailheads, hotel, and second-day activities. For hikes you can do by public transport from the city, see Montréal hikes without a car. A seasonal day-trip shuttle does not establish a complete overnight transport chain. For a car-free trip, verify both days and the lodging connection separately before booking.
Do we need to camp?
No. The main examples use inns or hotels. If you substitute ready-to-camp accommodation, check the equipment and booking rules carefully. Sépaq's camping FAQ limits advance one-night weekend bookings: it requires at least two nights unless you book within 72 hours of arrival, which changes the one-night comparison. To compare furnished camping options near Montréal, see camping without buying gear near Montréal. [20]
Does a hotel package include national-park admission?
Only when its written inclusions say so. This model assumes room-only accommodation without passes. Check the number of people and dates covered before removing admission from the budget.
Is the cheapest nearby destination always the best value?
No. A room price, minimum stay, or compulsory fee can outweigh the modelled fuel difference. Compare the complete payable total and the amount of travel your group is comfortable doing.
Can we use these plans in November or winter?
Rebuild them around current seasonal routes and conditions. The named summer walking routes do not all retain the same permitted use or access throughout the year. For example, Mont-Orford's summer Trois-Étangs listing gives a December closure point subject to conditions. [8]
