Booking the W Trek: Refugios, Camping and What to Do When One Night Is Unavailable

Book a connected W Trek itinerary with refugios or camping. Compare operators, count travel days and resolve a missing night without forcing the route.

Read the article

Book the W Trek as a connected sequence of nights, walking days and transfers. A bed at the beginning and another at the end do not make a complete trip if the middle night is still missing. Decide which sleeping arrangements your group will accept, compare whole sequences, and understand the change terms before paying for separate reservations.

For travelers who do not want to camp, the answer is especially important: an equipped tent is still camping. It can remove the need to carry a tent, but it does not provide an indoor bedroom. Keep that distinction explicit when requesting a quote or comparing a package.

This guide uses current accommodation and transport information checked on October 19, 2026, for planning the 2026 to 2027 season. It includes a hypothetical booking problem for eight adults, a practical alternative to a missing middle night, and the calendar days needed outside the trek. No example represents live accommodation availability.

01

Understand the accommodation map first

Two major operators appear repeatedly when you plan the W. Las Torres Patagonia lists mountain stays at Central, Cuernos and Francés. Vértice lists Paine Grande and Grey, which serve the western part of the trek. Knowing the operator behind each stop helps you send questions to the right place and recognize which reservations belong to separate contracts. [1] [2]

Think of the booking map in terms of the days around each bed:

AreaWhat to examine when placing the night
Central / eastern trailheadArrival transfer, a possible second night, and the full out-and-back Base Torres hiking day.
Cuernos or FrancésThe walk from the east and the following day's approach to the French Valley.
Paine GrandeAccess across Lake Pehoé and walking objectives toward the French Valley or Grey.
GreyWhether the plan includes an overnight there or a different, more limited Grey viewpoint outing.

A sector name is not a room type. Las Torres also markets Chileno camping products. Do not copy “Chileno” from an itinerary and assume you have found the indoor bed your group requires. Read the actual accommodation category on the quote. [3]

Similarly, “Grey” can refer to different parts of a trip. Write the exact accommodation, landing or viewpoint name into your notes. A scenic outing toward Grey is not automatically the same walk as reaching the refuge, continuing to the suspension bridges and returning.

02

Refugio, equipped camping or a package?

A refugio bed still needs a specification

An indoor refuge reservation can involve shared sleeping space. Vértice distinguishes a made bed with bedding from a simple bed without sheets or a blanket. Its FAQ also says room allocations are made by the operator, which tries to keep a reservation's guests together. Eight booked beds should not be interpreted as a private eight-person room unless that is confirmed. [4]

Before agreeing to the price, establish whether you are buying a bed or an entire room, what bedding is supplied, and which meals are included. Ask about a room split if staying together matters. Give everyone the same description so one person's idea of a “hut” does not become another person's unexpected dormitory.

Equipped camping changes the packing, not the sleeping environment

Compare an equipped campsite by listing each item supplied, who sets it up, how many people share it and what you still carry. A basic site and an equipped tent are different products even when they appear under the same campground name.

Use camping only if the group has agreed to it. If someone cannot manage the sleeping arrangement or has ruled it out, removing a missing bed by silently replacing it with a tent has changed the holiday they agreed to book.

A package can reduce coordination work

Packages already exist for the W, including options with indoor accommodation. Las Torres lists five-day W programs with mountain stays or equipped camps. Its “W Circuit +” variant adds a night at Hotel Las Torres and lists meals, regular transport, a catamaran leg and the park entrance, so inclusions differ between variants. Check the exact inclusions in the quote and whether a guide is included in the option selected. [5]

Compare the full service list against a trip assembled independently. A lower headline price may omit bedding, meals, a boat leg or a night outside the park. Conversely, a more expensive package may include something you do not need. Ask who handles disruption to an included service and which costs remain yours.

A package enquiry is worth making even if a direct search appears difficult. It is not evidence that a package has space, and it is not proof that the same rooms are unavailable through every booking channel. Obtain a complete dated proposal for your whole party.

03

Count the days beyond the trek label

A five-day W booking does not always mean five full hiking days. For example, the current Las Torres five-day sequence uses its first day for travel from Puerto Natales to Central, followed by the main walking days. Its listed night pattern is Central, Central, Francés or Cuernos, and Paine Grande, with a return to Puerto Natales on the fifth program day. [5]

For your own planning, a separate arrival in Puerto Natales and a separate onward departure make that seven calendar days and six nights:

Calendar dayRole in the tripNight
1Arrive in Puerto Natales, complete preparation and any briefing.Puerto Natales
2Travel to the eastern starting area.Central area
3Assessed Base Torres outing.Central area
4Walk toward the chosen middle accommodation.Cuernos or Francés area
5Assessed French Valley objective and onward stage.Paine Grande
6Assessed Grey-side objective, boat and onward transport.Puerto Natales
7Depart for the next destination.Outside this example

This is a planning framework based on the operator's geography, not a guaranteed independent schedule. The length of the French Valley and Grey-side outings must fit current trail instructions, your group and the transport you reserve. Do not expand them to the farthest possible viewpoints while keeping the same departure assumption.

If your flights bring you through another city, add that connection separately. If you want a rest day or an overnight at Grey, add or reorganize the necessary nights. Count the actual dates from your arrival accommodation to your final departure before comparing prices.

04

Use a complete booking record

Create one row for each night and one for each essential transfer. Keep the status visible so a promising option never looks like a completed reservation.

FieldWhat to record
Date and placeExact accommodation, sector and operator.
PartyNumber of guests, names and accepted room or tent arrangement.
Included servicesBedding, meals, packed lunch and any transport.
StatusConsidering, requested, confirmed or cancelled.
MoneyCurrency, total, payment already made and remaining balance.
ConditionsPayment date, amendment rules and cancellation consequences.
EvidenceConfirmation code, written acceptance and provider contact.

For a group of eight, a response offering six beds has not completed the night. Decide whether splitting properties is acceptable and assess what that would do to meals, meeting points and the following morning. Do not commit everyone to a plan that only fits the first few travelers who paid.

Las Torres' published reservation terms state that availability enquiries do not count as confirmations, and that reservations and changes need written confirmation and a code. Its standalone lodging reservations require full payment at booking; the published modification conditions are restrictive after full payment. Read the applicable section before assuming you can adjust the dates later. [6]

Use the relevant terms from every provider rather than carrying one company's policy across the whole trek. If you book through an intermediary, establish which business will handle an amendment and which written conditions govern it.

05

What order should you book in?

First establish the date range, group size, acceptable accommodation and realistic walking requirements. Then compare an entire chain, including the start and finish transport. Identify the night with the fewest acceptable alternatives and examine the nights immediately before and after it.

This does not mean paying for the hardest-looking night before checking anything else. It means using that night to test whether a coherent trip exists. If a provider offers a temporary hold, record when it expires and what secures it. Do not assume a search result or unpaid request has reserved the space.

When a sequence fits, complete the purchases according to their deadlines and keep checking the status of the whole chain. Release an unwanted booking through its proper cancellation process after you accept a replacement, and retain the cancellation record.

06

Worked example: eight adults and one missing middle night

Imagine eight adults traveling in February 2027. They will use indoor accommodation and want to stay together. The following dates and booking statuses are invented for the exercise:

DateIntended nightHypothetical status
February 8Puerto NatalesConfirmed for eight.
February 9CentralConfirmed for eight.
February 10CentralConfirmed for eight.
February 11FrancésNo acceptable indoor arrangement confirmed.
February 12Paine GrandeConfirmed for eight.
February 13Puerto NatalesConfirmed for eight.

Their onward travel is February 14. The missing February 11 night is not a small administrative gap: it affects where they finish on February 11 and where they begin the French Valley day on February 12.

First investigation: another suitable middle property

Ask about the precise indoor option at Cuernos on February 11. If all eight can be accommodated in an arrangement they accept, reassess both adjacent stages before making the replacement.

The locations are meaningfully different. CONAF lists the route from Guardería Italiano to Francés as 2 km and the route to Los Cuernos as 5 km. Those figures show why exchanging the names changes the position of the overnight relative to the valley approach. They do not tell you how fast this group will walk. [7]

The group should ask: what time can we realistically reach Cuernos, what is the next day's total walking requirement, and which French Valley turnaround fits that day? A room is a solution only if the revised walking days also work.

Second investigation: a different start date

Test the entire sequence one or more days earlier or later. Compare all accommodation and transport again, including the Puerto Natales nights and onward travel.

Because this example already contains confirmed bookings, moving dates may require cancellation and replacement rather than a free amendment. Make the financial consequences visible before calling the new sequence “better.” Eight small individual change costs can become a major group expense.

Reversing direction is another sequence to assess, but it does not create beds. It changes which date you need each property and reverses the approach and departure stages. Every day needs to be checked again.

Third investigation: keep the dates and change the trip format

Suppose the middle corridor cannot be booked, but the group could obtain an additional indoor night at Paine Grande on February 11. That is a hypothetical opportunity to investigate, not an availability claim.

They could assess this revised structure:

DateOriginal intentionAlternative to investigate
February 11Walk from Central to the middle accommodation.Use confirmed road connections to Pudeto, then a compatible catamaran to Paine Grande.
February 12Continue from the middle accommodation through the French Valley area.Make an assessed French Valley outing from Paine Grande and return to the same booked bed.
February 13Grey-side outing, then exit.Retain a suitable Grey-side outing and exit, subject to the verified boat and bus pairing.

This keeps the same calendar length but replaces part of the continuous walking route with transport. It also creates a two-night base on the western side. The exact eastern pickup, journey to Pudeto, boat and room must all be confirmed before accepting it.

There is a real product precedent for separating the highlights: Vértice lists alternative W programs and shorter French Valley and Grey experiences, some of them winter-season products. Ask for the exact indoor version, dates and sleeping category rather than assuming the headline package fits. [2]

The group's final decision is whether it values a continuous W more than keeping these dates and sleeping indoors. If continuous walking is essential and no complete chain works, a different travel window is the honest choice.

07

Align the boat, bus and park entry

The Pehoé catamaran connects Pudeto with Paine Grande. The operator's linked official sales portal now offers online tickets and describes navigation as weather-dependent. Use that current channel when checking the date, direction and conditions, instead of relying on older advice that every ticket must be bought at the dock. [8]

For the road connection, select the stop your itinerary actually needs. Bus-Sur identifies Pudeto as the catamaran connection and distinguishes it from Laguna Amarga and other park stops. Verify the service for your travel date and its relationship to the boat. [9]

Work backward from the last essential connection on an exit day. Include returning from the hike, collecting stored belongings if applicable, preparing for the boat and the required reporting time. A longer Grey outing may require a different night pattern instead of a faster walk back.

Purchase the correct park access through the official channel, or verify that your package includes it. CONAF directs visitors to Pases Parques for current entry information. Check the Torres del Paine entry page [10] against your dates and activities, and keep the pass with your accommodation confirmations and identification.

Our point-to-point hike and shuttle planner explains how to keep the trail finish and onward journey in the same plan.

08

Meals, bedding and costs can change the best option

Price the itinerary by night rather than multiplying one attractive starting rate. Include bedding, meals, packed lunches, transport, park access and accommodation outside the park. Check whether the quoted currency and traveler category apply to you.

For hypothetical arithmetic, four nights averaging $210 per person would cost $840 per person, or $6,720 for eight adults. If a $70 meal allowance per person per day is additional for four days, that adds $280 each, or $2,240 for the group. These invented figures demonstrate how inclusions change a comparison; they are not provider rates.

A package already including meals should not have that allowance added again. Likewise, separate the total cost from the unpaid balance so deposits are not counted twice. Include unavoidable change costs when comparing a replacement sequence with bookings already held.

If dietary accommodation is essential, obtain a specific answer before payment. Vértice's current food information describes standardized meal services and states that it does not operate a certified gluten-free kitchen or guarantee freedom from cross-contamination. A generic dietary note is not confirmation that a particular requirement can be met. [4]

Write down what each person must carry. Confirmed bedding can reduce luggage; it does not remove the need for appropriate walking, weather and personal equipment. Keep meals and sleeping arrangements attached to their individual nights so a changed property prompts the right packing review.

09

Keep the plan adaptable to current access

Accommodation availability is only one condition of a workable trek. CONAF's park guidance requires use of authorized trails and overnight areas, respect for trail closing instructions, and compliance with the relevant seasonal rules. A reservation does not overrule a closure. [7]

Before travel, recheck the named route segments rather than interpreting an announcement about the separate O Circuit as an announcement about the entire W. Confirm any guide requirement for your dates and circumstances through the current official information.

Keep essential documents accessible without depending on a last-minute connection. Give each traveler the overnight sequence and the group's contact arrangement. If conditions change during the trip, seek current instructions before deciding which accommodation or transport to amend.

11Questions

Frequently asked questions

Can I complete the W Trek without camping?

Indoor accommodation options and packages exist, but you need a complete dated sequence for the whole group. Confirm the sleeping category at every stop. An itinerary containing a sector name alone does not establish an indoor bed.

Do I need to book with both Las Torres and Vértice?

Many independently arranged sequences involve both operators. A package may consolidate the purchase and include their services, so check who confirms each component and who handles changes. Compare the actual night pattern, not just the business selling it.

Is five days enough, including travel?

Check what those five days contain. The example here adds a Puerto Natales arrival day and an onward departure day to a five-day park program, making seven calendar days and six nights. International connections may require more time.

Does reversing the W solve a sold-out night?

It may change the dates you need, but it does not guarantee a room. Rebuild the whole sequence, walking stages and transfers, then compare cancellation costs before replacing an existing booking.

Can I use an unreserved campsite if a refugio is full?

Do not treat camping as an automatic fallback. You need an authorized place, the required arrangement and suitable equipment. CONAF prohibits overnighting outside authorized areas.

What if we want the main sights but cannot obtain a continuous route?

Investigate a properly arranged combination of eastern day hiking and a western base, or a suitable operator package. Be clear about the walking sections omitted, the extra transfers and what is actually confirmed. The result can be a different holiday that still fits the group.
