Overlanding Gear List: What to Pack for a Multi-Day Off-Road Trip

You have the route mapped, the dates blocked, and the rig ready. Then you are standing in the garage the night before departure, staring at a pile of gear with no clear system, and that is exactly where trips start to go sideways before they even begin.

This guide covers what you actually need for a multi-day off-road trip, organized by category so you can pack methodically instead of frantically. Whether you are running a weekend desert loop or a two-week backcountry traverse, the categories stay the same. What changes is quantity, redundancy, and how much weight your vehicle can realistically carry.

Vehicle recovery gear

Recovery is the category where under-packing has the most serious consequences. Getting stuck 40 miles from pavement without the right tools turns a good story into a bad situation fast.

Essential recovery gear:

  • High-lift jack, 48 inches minimum for most lifted rigs
  • Traction boards, two of them, matched to your tire width
  • Kinetic recovery rope or snatch strap rated well above your vehicle's gross weight
  • D-ring shackles, at least four, with screw-pin closures
  • Shovel, folding or full-length depending on space

Solo overlanders should add a come-along or a portable electric winch. Recovery with a partner is far easier than self-recovery, but if you are running alone, you need the tools to do both.

Vehicle repair and maintenance

Mechanical problems are a matter of when, not if. The goal is not to carry a full workshop. It is to handle the failures most likely to strand you.

Tires and wheels. A full-size spare rather than a space-saver, a portable air compressor that can take you from trail pressure back to road pressure, a tire plug kit with more plugs than the kit ships with, bead sealer, and a pressure gauge.

Fluids and filters. Engine oil, at least one extra quart and two for longer trips. Coolant, brake fluid, power steering fluid if your rig uses it, and a spare fuel filter.

Mechanical spares. The specific belts your engine uses, spare fuses for every amperage in your fuse box, electrical and self-amalgamating tape, wire connectors, spare bulbs, epoxy, duct tape, and zip ties in several sizes.

Tools. Socket set in metric and standard, combination wrenches, screwdrivers, pliers and channel-locks, a torque wrench if you run aftermarket suspension, a multimeter for electrical diagnosis, and a breaker bar.

This is where overlanding and casual camping diverge most sharply. Cell coverage disappears fast on backcountry routes, and paper maps are not optional.

Navigation. A dedicated GPS unit with topographic maps loaded offline, paper maps for your region including USFS and BLM sheets, a compass, and offline maps downloaded on your phone as a third layer. Communication. A satellite communicator for two-way messaging and SOS, a CB radio if you run with a group or on popular off-road corridors, a ham radio for longer range on remote routes if you hold the licence, and a charged power bank.

Shelter and sleep system

Your shelter setup depends on your rig and your comfort threshold. Rooftop tents, ground tents, and sleeping in the vehicle all work. What matters is that your system handles the actual temperature range you will encounter, not the best-case forecast.

  • Tent or rooftop tent suited to your vehicle's roof rating, plus a ground tarp or footprint
  • An awning for shade and rain cover at camp, worth the investment on trips longer than three days
  • Sleeping bag rated 10 to 15 degrees below the coldest overnight temperature you expect
  • Sleeping pad with adequate R-value: R-3 minimum for three-season use, R-5 or higher for cold desert nights
  • Camp chairs, a folding or tailgate table, a headlamp per person with spare batteries, and a lantern

Water and hydration

Water is the heaviest thing you will carry and the most important. Plan for more than you think you need, then add a margin on top of that.

Size your onboard water storage for trip length and group: a minimum of one gallon per person per day for drinking and cooking, and more in hot or dry conditions. Collapsible containers and jerry cans cover the gap if your onboard system falls short.

Carry a filter for sourcing from streams and springs, purification tablets as a backup, and a collapsible bucket for drawing from shallow water.

Never rely on finding water at a specific location. Springs dry up, sources get contaminated, and maps go out of date. Carry enough to reach your next confirmed source with reserve.

Food and cooking

Overlanding gives you more cooking flexibility than backpacking because you are not carrying everything on your back. Use that advantage.

A two-burner propane stove with a single-burner backup covers most trips, with fuel sized at roughly one canister per three to four days of two-burner use. Add a cast iron skillet or hard-anodized pan, a pot with a lid, a coffee setup, a cutting board and knife, basic utensils, and biodegradable soap.

For storage: a hard-sided cooler if you are near resupply points, a dry box for non-perishables, and a bear canister or hang system if your route passes through bear country.

Plan high-calorie, low-prep meals for driving days, keep freeze-dried meals as emergency backup, and carry more snacks than seems reasonable. Clothing and personal gear

Pack for the actual conditions, not the best-case scenario. Desert and mountain terrain can swing 40 degrees between midday and midnight.

Build a layering system: a moisture-wicking base layer, a fleece or light down mid layer, and a waterproof, wind-resistant shell. Add sun protection (wide-brim hat, sun shirt, UV-rated sunglasses), light liner gloves plus a warmer pair, a warm hat, and gaiters if you will be hiking in loose terrain.

Footwear splits three ways: hiking boots or trail runners for your planned activities, camp shoes for around the site, and waterproof boots if your route includes creek crossings.

Personal items worth doubling: sunscreen, insect repellent, lip balm with SPF, and any prescriptions.

First aid and safety

Your first aid kit needs to be proportional to how far you are from help.

Contents worth carrying: trauma bandages and hemostatic gauze, wound closure strips, an irrigation syringe, a SAM splint and ace bandages, blister treatment, tweezers and a tick tool, antihistamines, ibuprofen and acetaminophen, antidiarrheal medication, a CPR face shield, and nitrile gloves. Beyond the kit: a mounted and accessible fire extinguisher, an emergency whistle per person, a signal mirror, and an emergency bivouac bag.

Power and electronics

Modern overlanding rigs often carry more electronics than a small office. Managing power properly keeps everything running when you need it.

Small organizational items prevent the daily frustration of digging through gear to find what you need: headlamps with a spare, a multi-tool, 50 feet of paracord, bungee cords and ratchet straps, trash bags, biodegradable toilet paper and a trowel, hand sanitizer, wet wipes, a quick-dry camp towel, and a clothesline.

Putting the list together

The most common overlanding packing mistake is treating this as a single flat list rather than a system. Pack by category, store by category, and know where everything lives before you leave. Recovery gear should be reachable without unpacking your kitchen. Your first aid kit should not be buried under sleeping bags.
