Day 1

Day 1: Halifax to the Bay of Fundy

Leave downtown Halifax and drive to the coastal fishing village of St. Martins on the Bay of Fundy, about 235 km away. Stop for an early lunch and take in the village's twin covered bridges before heading to the shore. At low tide, walk the beach to the St. Martins Sea Caves, a round trip of about 3.2 km, to explore caves carved into the cliffs by the Bay of Fundy's tides. Afterward, return to the village and settle in for the night at a country inn overlooking the bay, with dinner served on-site.

Day 2

Day 2: Saint John and the St. Andrews Ferry

After breakfast, drive about 68 km to Saint John to witness the Reversing Falls, where the tides of the Bay of Fundy push the Saint John River's flow into reverse. An observation deck and interpretation centre explain the phenomenon. Continue into historic uptown Saint John for lunch on King Street and a visit to the City Market. From there, drive roughly 92 km to the Letete Ferry Terminal for a 20 minute government ferry crossing to Deer Island, where scenic coastal roads lead to a viewpoint over the Old Sow, the largest tidal whirlpool in the Western Hemisphere. Return by ferry to the mainland and finish the day at a historic resort overlooking Passamaquoddy Bay in St. Andrews-by-the-Sea, within walking distance of the town for dinner.

Day 3

Day 3: Coastal Trail and Acadian Region

  • 294 km drive
  • 9 km on foot

Depart St. Andrews-by-the-Sea and drive about 8 km to the Point Wolfe Trailhead to begin a coastal hike. The Squaws Cap Viewpoint trail runs 6.4 km one-way with about 180 m of elevation gain, tracing a ridge above dramatic cliffs and open ocean views before returning the same way. Back at the trailhead, drive a short distance to a seafood restaurant for a late lunch of lobster rolls and other fresh catches. The day ends with a 78 km drive to a country inn in Sussex, where dinner uses local ingredients. In total, the day covers about 294 km of driving and 9 km of hiking.

Day 5: Kouchibouguac and the Acadian Coast

After breakfast, drive about 92 km to the entrance of Kouchibouguac National Park. From the entrance, walk the Kellys Beach Boardwalk, a 4.8 km round trip across dunes, lagoons, and a pristine barrier beach. Return to the park entrance and drive roughly 48 km to the Acadian town of Bouctouche for lunch, known for its fresh seafood and cultural heritage. Finish the day with a short drive to a heritage inn set in a converted building, within walking distance of the coastal boardwalk and nature attractions.
