Day 1

Arrival and First Look

The trip begins with picking up your RV rental at the regional airport, with time built in for paperwork and a vehicle orientation. From there, it's roughly an 80-mile drive to Mather Campground in Grand Canyon Village, where you'll check into a full-hookup RV site with restrooms and showers nearby. Once settled, stop at the Grand Canyon Visitor Center to pick up Junior Ranger materials for the kids and watch the park orientation film, a great way to introduce the canyon to first-time visitors. A short drive brings you to Mather Point for your first true canyon view, a paved and accessible rim walk suited to all ages, ideally timed for sunset. Before heading back to camp, swing by the Market Plaza in Grand Canyon Village for groceries or easy dinner options, including a deli with hot food, pizza, and sandwiches. Back at Mather Campground, settle in, start on the Junior Ranger booklets, and turn in early after a day of travel.

Day 2

Into the Canyon and Geology

  • 12.2 mi drive
  • 2.2 mi on foot
  • Night: Mather Campground, Grand Canyon Village area

After breakfast at the RV, pack snacks and water and drive about 4 miles to the South Kaibab Trailhead, using the free shuttle if the lot is full. From there, hike down the South Kaibab Trail to Ooh Aah Point, a round trip of about 1.8 miles with roughly 200 feet of descent. The wide trail and dramatic views make this a favorite first canyon hike for children. After returning to the trailhead for celebratory snacks, drive about 4 miles to the Yavapai Geology Museum, where hands-on exhibits and huge windows overlooking the canyon make a perfect spot to continue Junior Ranger work. Head to Bright Angel Lodge, about 2.5 miles away, for lunch, with burgers, sandwiches, and ice cream all on offer. Afterward, walk the paved Trail of Time, a 1.3-mile interpretive rim path where each meter represents a million years of geologic history, complete with markers and rock samples. Return to Mather Campground for rest and playtime, prepare dinner at the RV, and if timing allows, catch an evening ranger program at the campground amphitheater.

Day 3

Desert View Drive and Sunset

  • 5.6 mi drive
  • Night: Mather Campground, Grand Canyon Village area

Today focuses on exploring beyond the village area. Start at the Tusayan Ruin and Museum, where an 800-year-old Ancestral Puebloan site and a small museum give kids a glimpse into the canyon's ancient human history via a short, self-guided trail. From there, drive about 15 miles to Grandview Point, one of the South Rim's most dramatic overlooks and a striking contrast to the village-area views from earlier in the trip. A short walk from the parking area leads right to the rim. Later, head to Hopi Point, about 17 miles away, known as one of the best sunset viewpoints on the South Rim thanks to its wide, sweeping canyon views. Use the shuttle or drive depending on timing. After a full day of sightseeing, return to Mather Campground, about 4 miles away, for an easy dinner and an early night.

Day 4

Rim Trail Adventure and Junior Rangers

  • 6.8 mi on foot
  • Night: Mather Campground, Grand Canyon Village area

After breakfast at the RV, pack supplies for a full day on the trail and drive about 2 miles to park near Kolb Studio, the starting point for today's rim walk. From here, hike the paved Rim Trail west to Hermits Rest, a one-way distance of about 5.5 miles. The trail is mostly flat with continuous canyon views, and there are plenty of viewpoints along the way for kids to pause and take it all in. At Hermits Rest, refuel at the snack bar with sandwiches and drinks inside the historic stone building. Instead of retracing your steps, take the free Hermits Rest shuttle back to Kolb Studio and your waiting RV. Next, head about half a mile to the Visitor Center for the Junior Ranger program, where kids turn in their completed materials, join a ranger-led activity, and earn their badges. Return to Mather Campground, roughly a mile away, for a celebratory dinner and to begin packing up ahead of departure.

Day 5

Wildlife and Journey Home

Start the day by packing up the RV and checking out of Mather Campground, allowing plenty of time to secure everything for the drive ahead. Head toward Williams, about 58 miles away, for a stop at Bearizona Wildlife Park. This drive-through park lets you see bears, wolves, bison, and more right from your RV, plus a separate walk-through area, making it a fun final activity for the kids. Just a few miles away, stop at the Route 66 Diner for a nostalgic meal featuring burgers, shakes, and a children's menu. From there, it's about a 53-mile drive back to the regional airport to return the RV, complete the inspection walkthrough and paperwork, and take the shuttle to the terminal. Check in for your flight to close out your Grand Canyon family adventure.
